Petworth

Anonymous
The other day I posted that I took a long walk and ended up in Cleveland Park and found it sterile and boring. Today I ended up in Petworth and found it much more lively and interesting. I’ve never really spent much time there but now I can see why it has so much appeal. I would definitely pick it over Cleveland Park.

Thoughts?

I think both are great neighborhoods in their own way. You must think highly of yourself to consider each of your neighborhood opinions worthy of a thread.

Cleveland Park is a little boring, true (not as much to do there as other parts of DC). However, on the flipside, it is very safe, has excellent schools, is till close to the city, and your neighbors will be people who are highly educated and have decent-good incomes.

On the other hand, although Petworth may be livelier, its not safe (crime is up), has crap schools, and tbh is not that nice part of the town (and therefore also a decent commute away from the nicer parts of DC).

Much rather pick Cleveland Park than Petworth tbh.

So, your RE agent isn’t allowed to warn you off; you must look up the stats yourself. Petworth was and should be fantastic again. I now would not go there day or night until further notice

My thoughts? Are that you’re a 27 year old single renter.

You still don’t understand the essence of Cleveland Park because you’re comparing the number of bars and other 20-something renters visibly walking their french bulldogs and/or pit mixes. Petworth does win this round.

If you have options and have or want kids, I wouldn’t choose Petworth. I live here with a 4 year old. Some blocks are dicey. Some are just fine. I personally have not felt unsafe but there has been a lot of gun violence and criminal activity. I moved here in 2017 and am now stuck with a cheap mortgage and interest rate so can’t really move now. But the school situation is not something I appreciated prior to having a kid. Kid is going to go to private as the lottery hasn’t worked for us yet.

So you don’t have school age kids to worry about.

Cleveland Park should be a lot nicer than it is, but decades of aggressive NIMBYism have really taken a toll. It's too bad; 20 years ago I thought I'd want to live in Cleveland Park when I got to home buying age, but now the main drag just looks run down and kind of sad.

Petworth has it's troubles, but the long-run prospects for its amenities are a lot better.
