I've lived in Petworth since 2001. Raised my children here (lotteried into WOTP schools, although I see more and more neighborhood folks walking their kids to local schools each morning). Crime, while not great, is not the hellscape some try to describe. It's a great neighborhood that is accessible to other parts of the city and it's easy to get into Maryland
You’re likely just used to the crime. ANY shootings in a residential neighborhood is unacceptable and not a place to raise a family. There is notably higher crime in Petworth and anyone choosing to live there has either low standards or is delusional.
NP. People live in Petworth for many reasons, not due to low standards. Petworth is in a great location, in addition neighbors are very nice and down to earth (unlike you.)
I agree that Petworth seems lovely. And should be. But he crime stats and the stories out of Petworth are chilling. So what gives and what would make the change? There are two historic Council recalls in the works and the crime bill just passed? What are the issues? What will make the difference? There is no reason any part of DC should put fear in anyone. I love Petworth for its relative affordability, fun spaces and nice houses, and nice people. But then what happens? Is the crime from within or comes into the locale and why?
Much of the violence comes from street crews/gangs that are located up and down 14th St and Georgia Ave and in adjacent neighborhoods. In Petworth area there are the following crews (or so I gather): 3500, which operates in SW Petworth and northern Columbia Heights; 1-4 Zone, farther north on 14th St; Rock Creek, just SE of the metro, and 640, south of there; 5th/7th n Taylor, NE of the metro; Hilltop around 2nd and Upshur; CRT, around 9th and Crittenden; and of course the infamous KDY crew on Kennedy St. And I think there are even a few others that I’m missing! You can read more about the crews and associated violence here: https://cjcc.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/cjcc/release_content/attachments/DC%20Gun%20Violence%20Problem%20Analysis%20Summary%20Report.pdf That was the initial report I read on the violence, and it looks like they’ve released an update with new data: https://nicjr.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/NICJR-GVPA-Summary-Report-January-2024.pdf
