I'm so sad for my kid

Yes it is a safety for ivy kids per post above.

You obviously have no idea what a safety school is. Michigan is nobody’s safety. If your private school’s graduates treat it that way, the admissions committee would have figured it out years ago. If they are accepting students from your school, it’s because historically enough of them have matriculated.

Transferring is always an option

If waitlisted at Wisc, he can probably get admitted if his college advisor calls and says he will definitely come if admitted.

Some people call reaches targets and targets safeties.

Really? He's deferred now. You mean we have to wait to see if he's waitlisted or can now? His college advisor is clueless. Can the school counselor call?

Ask the school counselor to call or e-mail the regional admissions officer to say that Wisconsin is Larlo's number 1 choice.

This. Plus write a LOCI that says it is his first choice as well.

Off topic, but do Larlo and Larla exist anywhere but here?

His high school counselor was pushing him to ED a tougher school but he has always wanted Michigan. It's just so hard to see kids who have worked for something not get it. It's ok to be sad for a couple of days (I think it hasn't hit him yet - he's still stunned despite me trying ot prepare him) and then I agree we pull it together and it's onward to the next round. The kicker is, my ds' girlfriend got in, she didn't submit test scores and she doesn't even really want to go. It was a rough night here.

So sorry on that. I know a couple of kids deferred from Michigan, who doubled down on LOCIs, etc, and got in one and two years ago - also from NYC privates. And it is really hard when kids who aren't really interested get in while kids who really want to go end up on the sidelines for longer.

GL to your DC. Write that LOCI and focus on what else is to come as well as what may be in hand.

Many deferrals turn into acceptances at Michigan. I’m glad he didn’t ED to a tougher school.

Hmm I don't think this is correct? I have not heard that

Has been the case at our DCs' school, but is a NYC private with a lot of full pay.

Texas is almost an impossible admission OOS. Texas does not hold regular classes during the summer (except summer school). Even so, there are several lakes, the river and may pools all in or close to the city. Wisconsin was minus 30 degrees, during the recent cold spell (during regular semester class).

Very different places.

We're normalized knowing early, but it doesn't matter. I don't even think it's better.

The apps are in. The work is (mostly) done. For people who don't decide during EA/ED rounds, something amazing happens: the power shifts to you.

Before you were courting colleges. Now some of those are courting you (your kid). That's a good time. DOn't miss it.

Kids with decisions are decided. They watch other kids go off to accepted students weekend and even get more options rolling in. This is where buyers remorse sets it.

This won't end perfectly, but it will be fine. Sulk today. Then tomorrow set out a plan for the 4th quarter (or whatever your sport metaphor). Put the dates into your calendar for accepted students weekend at UGA and MD and have him GO. Buy the plane tickets. Then email the college counselor and say, we want to push for WI and MI. You should ask for best plan - is there any way they can vouch for you, does one school have better odds than the other. The schools themselves are usually pretty clear on what they want.

It's January. It won't be perfect, but you'll be happy - or at peace - in May.

Meant to add: email counselor and ask for a meeting. talk to him/her face to face. it's better. get that person on your side and clear about priority.

DP: I love this. Such a thoughtful and kind post. Thank you for taking the time. Things like this help more than just the OP.

I love it with the “full pay” posters lament not getting admitted. It’s awesome. They seem to think they can buy anything. Guess what? You can’t!
