Congratulations! Think merit comes out later

Good to know. We are OOS hoping getting some merit to bring cost down.

Maryland doesn’t give merit to oos applicants.

I don’t know anyone from OOS at UMD that does NOT have merit.

DD got accepted today but not merit (OOS - VA). Does merit offer comes later?

How do you get into Honors College? Is it something that should have been requested with the application or are selected admits offered HC?

Everyone’s automatically considered for honors and all of the other LLPs if they apply EA. No separate application.

Does this include ACES. My kid is a 2025 grad who wants to be in ACES. Is it seperate application or are you automatically considered?

First get an offer for Honors College then you get an opportunity to explore and rank your preference of program. ACES is one of the programs. Last year my CS major son had ACES as his first choice. He was placed in his 3rd. Oh well. He's surviving!

Sorry. what's an LLP?

Living Learning Program. UMD website has a ton of information. YouTube has videos.

Merit is weird for in state honors engineering and CS. My business terps was a 1/2 BK my engineering child has higher grades and similar test scores and got nothing.

IMO, it's because CS/eng is a lot more competitive. There are some seriously high stats kids in those programs.

CS dept just halved their admits starting in 2024.

not true - it maybe easier to get merit as OOS from what i see.. the amount is not going to be much but seems easier

Exactly. Other than BK, think the max annual is 12.5k. My kid gets 10. COA is ~44k

How many freshman admits get the full BK? What's the criterion for the award?

Mine put ACES as his first choice and got his 2nd choice despite placing nationally in multiple national level cybersecurity competitions. But it’s been fine.

PP...I would guess nearly all CS majors in Honors select ACES as first choice, but think that program only selects like 40 a year. They also want a variety so you get a mix of A&S, business, engineering etc all in ACES.

My CS major kid chose University Honors because they got the best dorms. ACES dorms are further away from campus.

Good move. Think my kid selected ACES, Univ Honors and Gemstone. Of course placed in Gemstone, the only 4 year program and dorm with no AC!!

Whew! What a relief!

That's tough to get into. What were stats?

Sorry for the delayed response. Impromptu family dinner to celebrate.

instate public (not MCPS) 4.0/4.4 at beginning of Sr yr.
approx. 8 or 9 APs plus about 5 DEs (mostly in CS/systems courses)
perfect test score-SAT
decent ECs (marching band & other bands/orchestra & a couple of clubs)
and imo, a great related internship.
