Trump needs to take over and start enforcing the laws already passed

Why didn't Trump get this system up and running from 2016 to 2020?

Oh right. Because it's much more useful as a political crisis.

Were you asleep when Trump enforced strict border measures - that were completely demonized by Democrats? "Concentration camps" ring any bells?
DP

Since when did fear of Democrats ever stop Trump? The border’s too valuable a wedge issue for the GOP to ever give up. Look what happened to them once Roe was taken down.

You seem confused. The point is that Trump has never been afraid of Democrats, which is why he implemented strict border protocols as president. I was trying to jog your (very selective) memory by reminding you how outraged Democrats were about his border restrictions. Of course, once Joe got into office, the first thing he did was to grab a pen and sign his EOs, ending all Trump border protocols. Fast forward to today, and we now have the worst border crisis in our nation's history, all due to Joe Biden.

It’s not remotely the worst border crisis in our nation’s history.

And wow do you guys love the idea of kidnapping children and then losing them. Adopted? Trafficked? Killed? Nobody knows because you weren’t keeping track. You were keeping track of their periods, though.

And you’re such bozos that you’re happy that the GOP isn’t working on this. So you can stay angry about immigration.

What sensible “border protocols” did Trump implement?

Seriously?? MPP/Remain in Mexico. Invoking Title 42. Started building sections of border wall - ended by Joe Biden. Ironically, Biden/Mayorkas are now realizing a border wall will indeed have to be built. Too funny.

Well, at least the Democrats won’t have to worry about Steve Bannon’s cronies stealing border wall funds.

“Since the holidays, there has been a drop in migrant encounters, which the Biden administration credits to aggressive enforcement by Mexico.”

But does the right wing echo chamber and outrage machine report this? Nope.

I'm holding out hope that this deal, or something even stronger, will go through. The border is untenable.

What do you think this bill will do, specifically, to improve the border?

Have you even read it? Here, educate yourself. This is what it would do, specifically, to improve the border:

https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2023-05/hr2.pdf#:~:text=H.R.%202%20would%20require%20all%20employers%20to%20use,are%20eligible%20to%20work%20in%20the%20United%20States.

Explain to me why you believe that adding more administrative workers will reduce immigration.

Explain to me how you would hold a bunch of hearings requiring a determination whether someone can be granted asylum or whether they should be deported without administrative workers? Or do you not actually understand how anything works?

Title 42 was only valid during the pandemic. Trump stole millions from donors pretending to be building a wall. He built some sections but then it turned out that some of his brand new wall would just fall over in a wind storm. Along with migrants discovering you can easily enough cut through it with a cheap battery powered angle grinder.

Lol, that ain't no border deal. It does nothing to solve the problem. Dems will never get it through their thick skulls that MORAL HAZARD matters. More judges and a bigger administrative state will just encourage more to come. You never addressed the root of the problem. Reject any deal calling for money for bigger administrative state. It solves nothing.

Exactly this. So no. Not a fix. And Republicans actually want to influx to stop. We don’t want more funds to help the migrants while they are here. No more migrants. I will support funding for a wall and razor wire and border patrol agents. Nothing else. Once we get that, then we can talk about figuring out how to deal with the people here but not even interested in that until the influx stops. Over 800 people have died at the border under Biden’s watch. How does that sound? Humanitarian? Services in Chicago for actually residents are being closed to enable funding for illegals. Good? Colorado offers free health care to illegals or families of illegals but regular poor Coloradans get buttkis. This is what the Democrats want the money for and I and tons of other Americans are DONE. Stop the crazy.

And the idea that "the GOP" is somehow trying to blow up this deal to "save it for Trump" is patently false. GOP senators are furious at the thought of Trump derailing the border bill. The OP's link even states as much.

McConnell literally said Trump wants this blown up so immigration remains an issue. I guess you don't want to believe him. Either way, it doesn't matter because Johnson has already refused to bring it to the House floor, eventhough it would pass there by 200 votes.

I'm not disputing that this is what Trump wants and said. The point is that whatever nonsense Trump is up to has nothing to do with the GOP senators trying to pass this bill.

Most of the GOP is going along with Trump's demand that we don't do anything about the border until Trump wins. With the GOP going along with that scheme, both Trump and the GOP want to make the immigration and border problem continue until then.

That proves the Republicas only care about the border and immigration because it riles their base, and can be used as a political wedge, not out of any genuine altruism or principles.

Yeah title 42 that Democrats railed against constantly when Trump implemented it.

Also I thought part of the Democrats’ argument for why those numbers don’t actually show that there were that many people trying and failing…just that “people kept trying over and over”.

Now it’s “oh looks way more successful than Trump administration! removed 2.5 million migrants! So many more than Trump!”

That border wall was a pricey piece of junk that fell over in places and was scaled easily while also being an environmental disaster. And it didn’t even reduce crossings. Moreover Trump only added 47 new miles to what was already there.

Correct. And if right wing media stopped fluffing the issue today, in under a week Republicans would cease being angry about it.

So here we have the GOP openly talking about not working on this and still the sad sacks on this board won’t admit it. Poor little lambs.

The border is a huge issue for people across the spectrum and has been for a long time. This bill effort doesn’t suddenly erase 3 years of history or the reality of migrants inundating cities and neighborhoods all over the country. Yes, the asylum rules need to be fixed but there are tons of policies Trump put in place that slowed the migration and reduced the number of parolees that Biden did away with. People don’t forget the many times he made in plain that the we welcome everyone… and him sending Kamala to find out the “root causes” which lead to exactly no changes. And we don’t forget the sanctuary cities all suddenly freaking out because now being a sanctuary city is NOT a good thing. And Biden has burned his street cred in this by installing a DHS secretary who will barely acknowledge that there are issues and never firing him. He could fire mayorkas and say “wow, he did a terrible job” but he won’t because he likes what Mayorkas is doing. We all see it and nothing that is happening right now can erase what we all see Biden has done. He has cooked his own goose on this one.

Oh, is that why you’re all happily supporting the GOP even though they’ll tank it because Trump told them to?

Tell that to the Democratic mayors who are complaining of being overwhelmed by illegal immigrants.

Imagine you’re President Biden and you literally know that you could stop child trafficking into the country, stop fentanyl from pouring across our border, stop criminals entering from raping and murdering our citizens, stop terrorists coming in and the horrific acts they plan to carry out, stop cities from being overwhelmed and crime exploding. But instead, your ONLY focus is maintaining power by continuing to import a new population of voters you believe will be loyal to you.

Biden could be working WITH Texas to secure the border. Instead he is ordering that the razor wire be cut to make it easier for illegal immigrants to cross the border. It is truly insane.
