Blair magnet and RMIB - how have EA/ED gone?

Last year 6 Blair kids went to MIT and 3 to Caltech. Most of the MIT kids were RD. Most of the Blair kids do not post until after ALL the schools are in (april)

Overwhelmingly, most Magnet kids from RMIB, Blair, Poolesville and Wheaton actually go to UMD. More of their credits accepted, many graduate early or have an easier time doing a double major, etc… UMD gives more money, and for STEM and little debt, it is hard to beat.

Why?

If your reason for choosing a magnet program is college admissions, then you are better off not attending the magnet. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

Both are important.

No, that's not the only reason but it's not a crime to consider that as well. College is no less important than HS. DC is very much into Blair but seeing how defensive Blair parents are about college placements gives me pause.

Especially with the CAPS program there at Blair as well. I assume many of these acceptances are CAPS kids, yes?

When have you ever seen Blair's parents crowing about Blair's EA/ED results? Even though Blair usually has the best college admissions than any MCPS school.

Blair SMACS discourage sharing EA/ED results publicly or between friends. Although admitted this comes with the downside of not being able to optimize your strategy of regular round applications, it significantly reduces the pressure, anxiety and jealousy that could otherwise destroy some kids at this sensitive period. So I'm grateful to it.

I'd rather kids be open and honest about it and chip in to help their friends strategize prepare applications.

Agree. Disappointment is part of life and kids need to learn how to deal with it.

The magnet coordinator will tell you this same thing in 8th grade and all throughout high school. I was at an event where he told parents “you are actively harming your kids” by pushing for elite college entry. This philosophy is one of the reasons our DC chose Blair, but if that message doesn’t resonate for you, it could get old quickly.

Oh my. Did you talk with the magnet coordinator? He very clearly says that you should not pick the Blair magnet because you are focused on college admissions. Pick it because it’s the right fit for your kid. Blair magnet college admissions are impressive - every year - but the administration of the program very much downplays this. They focus on the other benefits of the program and this culture is evident with the parents too.

And BTW, it’s not an AP program and kids are discouraged from going overboard on APs too.

that's my kid. They will have three STEM degrees in four years, all for $120K.

I've listened to the magnet coordinator. He made a good impression, but it is ridiculous to pretend that colleges don't matter, too. Is it really so extreme? And how is "pushing for elite college" different from "pushing for elite magnet program"?

I was there and I saw that, and I liked it. It's too early to stress about college. But I didn't get the impression that the thought of college is not allowed to cross your mind. I am even more surprised that Blaire parents are so defensive about it.

And yes, I know it is not an "AP program". Please.

I don't think it's defensiveness you are reading. It's wisdom they have developed with older kids. In the future you'll look back at yourself and your comments and cringe.
