Blair magnet and RMIB - how have EA/ED gone?

Was about to say something similar. Wheaton is doing great with at least 5 Ivy/T15 admits!

Know another Blair CAP admitted to Northwestern.

This group gets a little myopic. (I am also a Blair magnet parent, so nothing against Blair magnet --very happy with that program too).

How do you know that about Wheaton? Is it posted somewhere?

Why is Blair SMCS so closed up about it? I know many of the kids go to UM but really would be good to know. It’s a really strong cohort of kids and some realistic expectation setting would be helpful, considering how much kids can’t help but compare themselves to their peers.

The magnet administrator very much doesn’t want to share that info. He made that very clear at the open houses - it has no bearing on where your kid will go and you should pick that program if it’s the right level of challenge for your kid not because you expect it to get them into a particular college.

I’m certain the main reason most of the magnet applicants/students want to go to that magnet is because they and their parents want to get into a particular college. So, yes, these people want to know what the end result of having gone to the magnet will likely look like.

Nope. Not why my kid is there, and you seem to have completely missed the point. The magnet administrator specifically says to prospective students everywhere that this is not the place for you if you are focused only on college applications. He wouldn’t even show his slide on where kids were admitted.

You don't what you are talking about. Going to magnet gives you disadvantage in terms of college admission. You go there for other reasons.
Magnet alum.

I'm a Wheaton parent, and these are my kid and the friends that they have heard from.

Agreed --Another Blair parent.

One of the reasons why my kid chose Blair over RM. This was several years ago, but RM presentation was very name dropping and tried to overtly one-up Blair. Hopefully RM has changed that with new admin. Really like Mr. O's approach.

+1 This is why I love Blair magnet. And why RMIB turned me off.

There’s a lot of burnout. Kids are admitted, but decide to attend a less rigorous school in the end. A friend’s daughter was admitted to Chicago and ended up elsewhere. She had a lot of anxiety and unnecessary shame over it.

They show destinations by HS in Bethesda Magazine each year, so it's pretty easy to see. Blair has more prestigious schools than any other high school by a fairly wide margin, and it's a safe bet a lot of that is the magnet.

Love that about the Blair coordinator. My kid was in SMCS at Poolesville. While he might have had “better” admissions results by a myopic T10 bragging perspective, he has no regrets about attending. Fantastic experience. Currently having a similarly great experience at University of Maryland - College Park.

Do you have direct experience with Blair magnet? This doesn't sound like Blair in general. Because, while it is rigorous and kids get a but fried (mine included), I haven't seen anyone choosing a "less rigorous " school. I will say that mine targeted schools known for a more collaborative atmosphere (there are definitely some "mag bros" at Blair), but no less rigorous (at T10). Many Blair kids go to UMDCP because it is a great school, and they can afford it (and some get big scholarshipslik BK). Others get NM full ride to BU or similar opportunity. We were able to shoot for top privates (targeted these for breadth/flexibility of studies) because we qualified for financial aid. It's not all about status, and these kids have a great foundation to thrive at many colleges.

Not why my kid went, either, and if that's the goal then go elsewhere.

Half the magnet graduating class goes to UMD-CP. lots of donut hole families.

Perhaps, but they can see these things by looking it up in Bethesda Magazine.

Exactly. All you people who claim you're doing this for research can check Bethesda Magazine. Or wait til the end of the year graduation reports.

If you are sitting here in December looking at college admissions for children you do not know at a high school your own child does not (yet or ever) attend, that's mockable and we will laugh at you.
