If the election were held today, there would be very different outcomes.

The year is only a little half over, yet crime stats are blowing 2022 out of the water. The number of robberies and carjackings is truly absurd. I guess this is the progress the voters wanted and the outcome of restorative justice. DC, where you can do whatever you want and there are no consequences for anything. Congress needs to step in at this point, because it is clear the DC govt is incapable of fulfilling its basic requirement of govt, which is to ensure public safety and justice.

Queue the clowns - 'BuT It IsN't aS BaD AS 90s!!!!'

Lawdy how bad are these 2023 stats going to be by year's end?

Those are comparisons of year-to-date 2022 vs. year-to-date 2023.

Shhh, those facts will make OP's point invalid, so obviously they won't listen.

Not sure. Either way, they are bad and I have no clue how pg got so much more safer.

Hasn’t PG always been safer? Isn’t that any middle class black people moved there from DC during the crack era days?

There was a thought for a while that DC would continue to improve and most of the criminal element would move out of the city into the inner rings in PG. Obviously that thought is busted.

I don't think it's wrong, but what's happening is that the criminal element still comes into DC to commit crime. When MPD makes an arrest they indicate where the person is from, and if you pay attention you'll notice that many are from PG.

no, theres plenty of dc kids committing crimes in pg.

I think it's availability of guns to teens and young adults. DC seems to be flooded right now with ghost guns made from kits.

What are you talking about? DC does NOT classify kit made firearms as "ghost guns."
DC REMOVED prohibition on kit made guns from defintion of ghost guns. Here is the amendment striking kit made guns from the ghost gun defintion DC
Section 501 (D.C. Official Code § 7-2505.01) is amended by striking the phrase "ghost gun, unfinished frame or receiver, or ammunition" and inserting the phrase "ghost gun, or ammunition" in its place.

(b-1) Notwithstanding any other provision of this section, a person may lawfully:
(1) Self-manufacture a pistol;
and
(2) Possess and own a pistol that the person self-manufactured pursuant to paragraph (1) of this subsection and registered pursuant to § 7-2502.02.

https://code.dccouncil.gov/us/dc/council/code/sections/7-2505.04

You can make your own gun in DC, including from a kit it is perfectly legal. It is a crime not to register it. Just the same as it is a crime to not register a factory made gun. In DC a "ghost gun" is one of the following two, and only following two:
1) a gun made virtually entirely out of plastic that can defeat metal detectors
2) a gun where serial number has been filed off
Kit made guns are NOT ghost guns under DC law.

Also if guns are the issue why are stabbings and stabbing murder both up as well? We have a very small number of repeat criminals who are reposinsbile for virtually all DC violent crime. That is the DATA. When more are on the streets there is more crime. It is not a random sample of people committing crime in DC, it is a very specific group of 1,000 to 500 people. When most of them are in jail, crime goes way down, when most are out, like now, crime goes way up.
In 2012 we had half the murder rate today. Why? Because today we have half as many criminals incarcerated.

Better than red states anyway
https://www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2...e-crimes-measure-up/

As a die hard Democrat I can tell you that way of looking at it is is just not sober It is BLUE jurisdictions where upwards of 80% of violent crime occurs. States do not control staffing level of police. Nor do they control prosecution policy. Municipalities and counties do. There are about 20,000 municipalities in the US and 3,000 counties. Every single one of the top 40 homicide cities in the US is Blue and Blue run. And the same with counties. In fact Red counties and cities in the US average lower homicide rates than the EU has.

Because the poverty rate in Prince George's County is much lower. That seems obvious.

According to US Census data, the number of people in poverty in Prince George's County (11.5% of 967,194, or 111,227 people) is almost exactly the same as the number of people in poverty in DC (16.5% of 671,803, or 110,847 people).

Poverty level is not the issue. We had roughly same poverty level in 2012 in DC and HALF the murder rate.

How is it PG County has less murders than DC but more people????

But most crimes in DC are committed by people of color so it’s racist to make violent crime illegal!

These poor black youth have been marginlized by a raycist white system. How about instead of locking them up and throwing away the key like many white people wants to do, we give each of them a check for $100,000 if they get arrested. I bet you would see crime to zero very quick!

Well someone decent has to run first.

No one likes Charles Allen but no one ran against him.

Yeah I remember when March year-to-date data came out and people were like, it's only March, this doesn't show a trend yet, calm down.

And here we are in July, and it sure does!

Ugh this makes me so mad at our leadership. We can debate best policies but so many councilmen dug in on this notion that there is NOT a crime problem and now sheepishly are like, oh yeah maybe. This was clear as day two years ago and things have gotten worse even as crime in other big and more troubled cities has receded.

Exactly. I cannot stand Charles and Brianne especially.

Everyone I know who worked for Charles Allen thinks he’s a total clown. I worked with him in a volunteer role. He really thinks he will be the first dc senator.

I think a lot of it ties back to the loosening of regulations on vehicles - no longer requiring fines to be paid to get a license or register your car, allowing people to drive around in cars with phony paper tags, MPD no longer pulling people over for vehicle infractions, etc.

So much of the crime I've read about in the last 12 months involves the use of handguns + vehicles.

I agree with this also. There are cameras everywhere in this city but paper tags render a car invisible to them. Criminals know that they are mostly invincible against any law abiding citizen. Most people are stuck hoping the inevitable carjacking or worse happens to someone else, because it will happen.

Cameras should be able to read paper tags as well. If not they need to have a serious talk with their contractors and vendors.

Yes they can read them. But they are fake tags that have no tie to the vehicle.

How can you not know this? What point were you trying to make with your comment?

Camera will also give police the make, model and color of the car and if for example that car passes the same camera within 15 minutes every weekday as part of their commute, just set up with a cruiser to nail them the very next time they pass by. If it's a car with a whole bunch of outstanding tickets, it's well worth while. And if nothing else, if they start doing that in a very public way it will make every other person with a fake tag very nervous.

It is super cute that you think 14 year old stick-up kids are using these fake tags and cars for their daily commute.

Wouldn’t that make crime increase because everyone would want to get arrested to get the money?

It's super cute that you think fake tags are only used by 14 year old stick-up kids in DC. Cars with fake tags parking on DC streets are starting to be targeted for boots and towing. But a lot of them are not from inside DC and there are in fact people using them on their daily commute.

I mean, kinda?

The fake tags are used for armed carjackings with a gun in your face as well as by fat commuters with fake email jobs to skirt red light cameras. Just like with metros “anyone who wants to jump can ride for free policy” they are a huge contributor to the overall lawlessness in the city.
