https://mpdc.dc.gov/page/district-crime-data-glance The year is only a little half over, yet crime stats are blowing 2022 out of the water. The number of robberies and carjackings is truly absurd. I guess this is the progress the voters wanted and the outcome of restorative justice. DC, where you can do whatever you want and there are no consequences for anything. Congress needs to step in at this point, because it is clear the DC govt is incapable of fulfilling its basic requirement of govt, which is to ensure public safety and justice. Queue the clowns - 'BuT It IsN't aS BaD AS 90s!!!!' Lawdy how bad are these 2023 stats going to be by year's end? |
| Crime's up all over the country. |
Ah, there you are. |
Those are comparisons of year-to-date 2022 vs. year-to-date 2023. |
So 100% increase in car jackings in as little as half a year is the same everywhere.....yeah right. |
and? Violent crime is up by 34% YTD, property crime 28%, and all crime 29%. |
The link still has year end 2022 data. 2023 is blowing it out of the water and will easily exceed EOY crime stats from 2022. |
| I hope one of these criminals is kind enough to target a Member of Congress again because that’s what it takes for Congress to intervene (the Council is a lost cause). |

Whoa! These numbers are WAY above PG County!
https://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/4497/Annual-Offenses-by-Division-DCR For 2023: Homicides in DC is 130 Homicides in PG is 18 Sex Abuse in DC is 85 Sex Abuse in PG is 34 Robbery in DC is 1,699 Robbery in PG is 280 |
And, DC is half the size of PG county in terms of population.
|
Burglary is down 7%, theft from auto is unchanged, assault with a dangerous weapon is 6%, and as much as you want to make this specifically about DC, it's not. The whole thing about national trends is that they are national. Also apparently a national trend, among authoritarians, unfortunately: a desire to take self-representation, self-determination, and self-governance away from people who don't vote Republican. |

Yeah I remember when March year-to-date data came out and people were like, it's only March, this doesn't show a trend yet, calm down. And here we are in July, and it sure does! Ugh this makes me so mad at our leadership. We can debate best policies but so many councilmen dug in on this notion that there is NOT a crime problem and now sheepishly are like, oh yeah maybe. This was clear as day two years ago and things have gotten worse even as crime in other big and more troubled cities has receded. |
Violent crime, property crime, and all crime is up by 30+ percent nationally? Can you share a link? |

A couple points:
-Just because crime is "up nationally" doesn't mean we should throw up our hands and say, oh well. Guess we just sit back and ride the wave. And to repeat, many city leaders denied crime was up, or that residents should be overly concerned. -Murder is NOT up nationally this year. DC is now an outlier, and not in a good way. From a story last month (June 8): Homicides in some of America’s largest cities are falling after soaring during the first two years of the pandemic. ... So far this year, killings are down 12% overall in nine of the 10 most populous cities compared with the same time frame last year ... Homicides are down in six of those cities, including 27% in Los Angeles, 22% in Houston, and 16% in Philadelphia. In Texas, the cities of Dallas, San Antonio and Austin reported slight upticks. (Note: DC was not included in this list, but would have shown our murders up. Also, Philadelphia's murder rate was truly horrific, and remains very high, just down from last year.) https://www.wsj.com/articles/homicides-are-falling-in-major-american-cities-7b0bd906 |
Why is crime so much lower in PG county, which has 50% more people than DC? |
