Georgetown Prep decisions posted (huge wow factors!)

One note of nuance: Prep has a LOT of athletes interested in playing D1 in college. Some, like those mentioned above, end up in places like Hopkins, Princeton, and UVA. Those are exceptional kids going to exceptional schools. Other kids are very very focused on playing D1 and sports may play a more important role in their decision. So, while academically, they may be able to get into a stronger school, they would not have been able to play sports there. That affects the outcomes. Just something to consider.

GC Honors promoter - what sayeth ye?

It's pretty underwhelming this year. If you look at public schools in the area like Churchill or Whitman, they have better schools than Prep. The private school education isn't for every kid.

Prep will have same schools as Churchill. They will be around 25 percent at top 20 schools. I believe Stone Ridge does as well. Using the data from Bethesda magazine, last year only 7 percent of the Churchill class of 22 matriculated to top 20 universities. So private schools win on a per capita basis. Just because a huge public school has more admits to top 20 schools doesn’t mean anything when comparing it to schools with less than a quarter of their class size. Math is funny like that.

That is true. However, keep in mind these are public schools we’re comparing. Public schools don’t have any admissions process, so not every kid is going to have the same incentive to try in school (since their parents aren’t paying). Parents send their kids to Prep for the school’s reputation.

You just proved the point that private schools are better than public schools as a motivating factor. I prefer to surround my kid with other equally motivated kids, not a bunch of kids trying to coast through doing the least possible work. This is just one of the many reasons private schools are preferable for families who want kids to excel.

NP. Then why isn't the list more impressive? If you have the same outcome as publics, what difference does it make? i.e. in terms of motivation? I was prepared to be wowed, but if I had blindly seen it, I would have guessed it was public admissions. The "huge wow factor" is not accurate. It's solid, but wow?

This.

If this is where "motivation" getd kids when ALSO paying 40k a year, I stand by that 1. Public schools here get you just as far and 2. Maybe some of these kids aren't cut out for college

Why take down posts about certain schools?

The school put it out in the public about where the kids are going and I'm assuming they could have opted out and chose not to. They opened it up for public commentary.

Tell me your kid goes to prep and I know that you stink

Prep Kavanagh gross

It is not appropriate to comment on where specific kids are going and say things like “oh look at that one dummy kid going to a school in Kentucky.”

Every other school does mention this on their student college Instagram accounts. Prep wants you to think that these kids got in on academics and not their skill with the lacrosse stick.

This account is completely student-run.

I think then the entire thread is inappropriate.

However, that's the beast of social media. If you don't want to hear people's opinions don't put your business out there

Are they taking significantly harder classes at Prep?

The Chinese students are all going top 20. The US students are going to schools >100. (except so far for 2 Boston College sports recruits and 1 Princeton sports recruit).

It's really striking. Is it class rigor as well as grades?

Are these guys considered international or domestic citizens? also if they live in another country but have american citizenship, that’s a huge plus for geographic diversity. basically as much of a hook as someone from wyoming.

So the top universities are looking for Chinese citizens for the sake of diversity?

Even if the Chinese students are getting the same excellent grades as the white students, their achievement is even more impressive given that they are doing it all in their SECOND language in a culturally foreign setting. That's gotta be a plus for admissions committees.

Any student from mainland China attending GP as a boarder is undoubtedly a "princeling" - the sons of the very elite and the very rich. These students are regarded as VIPs when they apply to prominent American universities

Hopkins is D3, with the exception of their men’s and women’s lacrosse teams.

Not always, Sometimes the kids running the Insta site put up everyone they know. My kid did not submit and was surprised when I told him it was up there.

Why does that matter?? It still counts.

Right. I haven’t seen any other school identify recruited athletes, legacies or Diverse admits with asterisks on their matriculation lists.

It’s surprising to see how far the critics will go to devalue the achievements of other schools.
