IU or JMU?

JMU is a fine school (and a great in-state option) and many students are happy there, but IU is in a different league.

Does this control for popularity of certain majors that may not lead to higher earnings? This ranking may not be helpful in determining quality of education because a college can be outstanding in say education, but that will not fare well in "value" assessments.

Seems like the rankings give institution level economic value but also program level.

For example business: https://www.degreechoices.com/best-colleges/rankings/business/
And you can see even undergrad and grad and even drilled down.

Pretty useful, they claim the methodology unlike others is solely focused on ROI calculations: https://www.degreechoices.com/methodology/

Can be anothjer tool in the toolbox among others.

Indiana ffs.

I live in Michigan and after visiting both I would rather have my child at IU. It might be my ideal college town.

Indiana by a mile.

I could understand it if JMU were in-state, but OOS JMU vs IU? IU is just so much the more obvious choice. JMU is fine, but it's not even in the top 3 public schools in VA.

I'm a JMU graduate, my vote is for IU! Since this is an old thread, I wonder where the student ended up.

IU is one of the weaker schools in the Big Ten. Saying that, it’s still better than JMU.

+1

It's tough to beat IU for a kid who wants the traditional college experience.

JMU offers the same experience

Not really. IU is in the Big10, which is literally a whole 'nother league.

So the stadium is smaller at JMU. The overall student life experience is the same.

No need to say more about how you don’t understand college sports.
This thread is silly indeed.

These people will ever understand. The Big 10
has the 3 largest College football stadiums- which sell out almost every weekend. These people can never understand what a real sports program brings to a school not only in money which benefits all students but also the camaraderie and just fun. Plus an amazing college experience.

OP I don't know where you live since you say you are OOS for both but JMU requires some time driving in 81 which is the worst road (besides 95 of course). You have no idea how bad it is until you are stopped there for hours due to a wreck. Therr are tons of trucks and exits are far apart. So if you say-- well JMU is a 5 hr drive add a good 1-2 hours on there. Hell road.

IU is near the bottom of Big Ten college football excitement and attendance. Basketball is another story of course!

What makes IU special is the lack of engineering & low-key medical & law schools. It’s one of the few big public universities where a kid can study humanities or social sciences or music without some overworked engineering student telling them they are a loser going nowhere.

This is NOT true.

Actually it is true. Before we moved to DC 35 years ago, we had never heard of JMU. I"m from the south and my spouse grew up on the East Coast. We both knew of Indiana but not JMU.

The UI campus and Bloomington are gorgeous. It is a wonderful school as are many in the mid-west. Iowa, Iowa State, Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State have great campuses.

Show of hands. How many of you have actually spent any time in "fly over" country. I would guess very few.

DCUM posters scoff at anything that isn't IVY or top 25. It is ridiculous.

JMU currently 9-0 and ranked #21 in the country.

Indiana 3-6.

JMU offers the same experience
the campus and surrounding town are nothing alike.

I agree as someone originally from the west. I had never heard of JMU until moving to DC. I had a friend in high school who applied to Indiana and came home gushing about it after visiting.

Lots of dumb threads on this site. This one is near the top.

IU hype is such a letdown. Pick JMU.
