Not OP, but the issue is assuming that kids who are Black and Hispanic come from “disadvantaged backgrounds” and assuming that White and Asian kids do not, when there are some very privileged Black and Hispanic kids in this area and some White and Asian kids, particularly Asian, who aren’t advantaged at all. I’d hope a parent of a disadvantaged White or Asian kid would find a way to express their child’s interest in a program like YS, if appropriate, and would not be turned away, but some might simply infer from the background materials that their kids aren’t welcome. The program identifies kids that could benefit, so yes, a white or Asian kid who is economically disadvantaged will likely be identified. I know one of those kids (white). Yes, the program has white and Asian kids in it. Stop making things up. So a middle-class black kid is allowed in but a middle-class white is not? Got it. |

But Young Scholars isn't for kids with IEPs, it's for URMs. If she sits through the IEP process for a white or asian student and sees how unfair FCPS is to them, how would it justify the existence of special programming that student will never have access to? My white child went through the IEP process and we had no issues FCPS was amazing through the process. My daughter is considered 2E and was placed in level 2 services for math. I asked for the consideration. The school approved it and then advised me they put her into the young scholars program as well. I never asked about the program. We are middle class college educated. We have my daughter involved in outside stem programs already. |
This is a blatant racist comment. Shame on you. Newsflash - the Harvard president is about to get fired for this racist attitude. Your religion of blatant racism, woeness and 'equity' is going down in flames. |

IIRC, there was a school that sent out wording like that, kicked up a bunch of the same anger, then clarified that no, anyone could join.
The program is *designed* to help those underrepresented groups (marketed to them, etc.) , but I don't believe that it's *exclusive to* those groups. I'm pretty sure it's open to anyone. If you are interested, contact your school and genuinely ask. |
