Voters are not responsible for Dobbs. Voters have selected the Democratic candidate for president in 7 of the last 8 elections, but the candidate who lost the popular vote went on to win the electoral college vote in 2000 and 2016. Voters selected Al Gore to be appointing SC justices, but we got George W. Bush’s first term instead, and he appointed Justice Alito during that term. Voters selected Hillary Clinton in 2016, but we got Donald Trump instead, and he appointed Justices Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Coney Barret. Four of the current 9 SC justices were appointed against the will of the people. Those same 4 are 4/5 of the justices who signed on for the Dobbs decision. Dobbs does not represent the will of the people at all. That’s why there was no red wave in the recent midterms. Don’t you dare blame Dobbs on women or voters in general. Place the blame squarely where it belongs: extreme right wingers. |
Men who father children in their teens and 20s are more likely to join the military than childless men, and they’re unlikely to be having those babies with significantly older women. If we draft their female partners, those families have a problem. |
+1 This is blowing my mind. I’ve known about this forever and I didn’t have any brothers and my son is only 12. |
The fact that only people with female reproductive systems can get pregnant is the exact reason why the Dobbs decision is discriminatory toward women. Women are disproportionately affected by it. Women and men do not and can not benefit or suffer equally under Dobbs. The same is true for the Selective Service. Men are disproportionately harmed by it. Changing people’s minds, our culture, laws, power structures — none of that has been changed through “all or nothing” campaigns. You must have a specific, actionable goal that you’re working towards. Women weren’t granted the right to own property, have custody of their children, vote, join the military, etc., all at once. Change is incremental. As an attorney and activist, RBG made progress towards women being treated equally under the law by arguing a case for equal treatment for a man because he was being discriminated against due to his sex. I’ll fight to overturn Dobbs. You find for equality in the Selective Service. If we are successful, everybody wins. |
But not male partners??? I am always amazed at all of you self-proclaimed feminists who want men to be raising children on the same level as you, be involved, etc. and then the moment s hits the fan it's "women have to stay home with the children." Why can't women go instead of men? I'm sure exceptions will/can be made where there are two small children in the household to make sure at least one parent is not deployed at the same time, but you shouldn't get a pass because you have a uterus. |
I'm not even arguing that women are disproportionally affected by the Dobbs decision. Of course, we are. But not everything we do in society should be based on one asinine law. I will vote again and again to have safe, legal and affordable aborion for women. The rest I agree with. Change comes in incremental ways and perhaps just thinking about the outdated selective service laws is necessary at this stage. |
This. One has to go, it's not necessarily the man. |
Duh. Of course it doesn’t have to be the man. But if a 19 year old male impregnates a 17 year old female, who do you think is more likely to join the military so they can buy diapers or pay for child care? You can’t seriously be arguing that just as many women are joining the military as men? |
No one is talking about voluntarily joining the military here. The topic at hand is the draft where neither parent/person wants to join but are compelled by the government to serve. In that case it should be both men and women. |
Sorry, I thought you were replying to the specific scenario above. Young man enlists to support child and then there’s a draft and his child’s mother also has to serve. |
Pardon me, that should have been 4 out 6 justices, not 4 out of 5. |
I don't hear the girls complaining about it. |
LMFGTFY. Actually, no, DIY. |
Felony? |
Amazing how the Federal government knows what a woman is in some contexts but not others. |
