18 yr old and registering for Selective Service

Anonymous
When my DS went for his learners permit in VA, it had a question about automatically registering you for it when you turn 18. He was 15 at the time. My DH asked about a month after he turned 18 whether he had registered. I went to the website and entered his information, and it said he was registered as of the month before he turned 18. Pretty automatic as long as they checked the box.

What on earth is this???

My son just filled out college apps, I filled out FAFSA and CSS, and nowhere did it mention selective service.

No. We are not American, but our son was born here and is a US citizen.

I think that any company that performs work for the Federal government, which is the vast majority of US companies, have a question on their job application asking if the applicant registered for the selective service.

Ugh, you do realize women serve honorably and with valor currently - to include frontline combat positions in the next war?

Sexism and historical inertia. It should be required for everyone IMO.

Could be used for national service requirements including the military. All USA MOS, Military Occupation Specialities, have been open to women since 2016. 2020 ACTF -Army Combat Fitness Test-neutral on age and gender. In 2022 it changed with accommodations or norms for age and gender. So if there needs to be a draft off the people registered for Selective Service because the USA needs more deployable people capable of functionning in hostile environments look at statistics.

More likely for the Marines or Army to get males than females capable of certain MOS?

I think if they don't register eventually a reminder gets mailed to your house.

You must not have a son and a daughter. Or you do and you think your daughter is not disposable like your son.

During the pandemic, without in person HS or peer reminder of this, completely forgot. Was not until a fed. intern application that it was a question that you. Registering online took no time at all.

Never got one. DS turned 20 before realizing we'd missed this.
