Maureen Dowd column on Landon

What do expect from a school whose most famous alum is Maury Povich? They're breeding a lot of rocket scientists over there.

nouveau riche - blowhard culture - that's a pretty good description of Landon, from the parents who scream on the sidelines of lacrosse teams to the big white lexus SUVs with gold trim they drive away in.

Is Maury more famous than George Huguely?

I'm no fan of Landon, but how do we really know that the obnoxious post citing salaries was by a Landon parent? Anyone can impersonate a Landon parent on this anonymous forum, and that post is almost too obvious a ploy to make Landon look bad (or worse than they already look).

The school is its own worst enemy. There are some wonderful teachers there, the campus is lovely, and the school enrolls and graduates some of the nicest, brightest young men you could meet, many of whom go on to excellent colleges. It has excellent art and music programs and is very well run. BUT, the dominant culture is one of wealth and privilege. The board is made up of mostly rich, lacrosse-playing businessman alums, and the parent body skews white, wealthy, Republican, and country club. The moms mostly don't work, and everyone drives a monster SUV. They're still trying to get the hang of the diversity thing, and they need to accept that if they want to keep getting the smart young men, they're going to have to kick some of these spoiled sons of alums to the curb. Pronto. But nobody wants to change the status quo.

Does Landon have any gay couples who are parents?

TOPPER SHUTT WENT TO LANDON? wow.

Looking at the Trustees listed on their website, http://www.landon.net/page.cfm?p=327 they ARE virtually all Alum, and only 3 of 29 are women. A group like that might well be expected to relieve their (remembered or fantasy) childhood vicariously through their sons.

I find there IS a pattern here that I dont see at STA, Prep, etc., and when you look at the governence, it too fits that pattern. My sense is that the other boys schools Trustees are more likely 1/3 women, 1/3 alum, 1/3 independent, faculty or dad.

I must live a cloistered life -- other than Maury Povich and Topper Shutt, I've never heard of any of those people.

Uh, this is an all boys school ... if they are all virtually alum, how can any trustees by women? Are they wives of alum?

It cannot be a coincidence that this same school keeps coming up again and again in these awful reports.

My feelings exactly. One, two incidents: I would say, oh, coincidence, people should lay off. But over and over and over--well, at some point one stops believing that it is a coincidence.

And imagine what we don't know.
