Maureen Dowd column on Landon

Who punished the kids who cheated, or the kids who acted as conduits for the cheaters who happened to not be on the lacrosse team?

Can anyone else corroborate this story?

Perhaps the boys pick up on this or perhaps even witness or overhear their Dads. Porn is also to blame, IMO. Porn pretty much does nothing BUT objectify women and boys have pretty much unfettered access to unlimited amounts of porn. I'm dating myself, but my generation had to pass around the Hustler and Playboys or a VHS tape...usually not so hard core. The internet offers much more and no limits. I'm no prude but porn is much more of a danger to society than most people want to admit.

News flash: Your teenage boys only have access to internet porn if you give it to them. Put filters on your computers, and a password on the only computer he's allowed to use, which is in the kitchen or the family room or somewhere else where you can see him when he's using it. Do NOT give him an IPhone or an ITouch or any other handheld device that can access the internet, or if you do, disable the internet. Block all offensive TV channels on your television, and do not have youtube on your big screen. I agree completely with the poster that our culture is so sex-saturated that it is rather duplicitous to blame boys for doing what our culture promotes at every turn. My kids think I don't "trust" them, but I tell them, I wouldn't leave pornography lying around the house, so why would I leave it a click away?

Jesus, you sound like an awful, awful overprotective terrible parent. I would kill myself if i were your child. You don't trust them, or else you wouldn't spy on them and put filters on their computers. I feel bad for your children.

I agree with the PP about the need for Internet filters. Like her, I have a filter and time constraints installed on all the home computers, my kids use only computers in common areas during approved times of the day, and they don't have iPads or iTouches or iPhones. Trusting a teen boy with porn is like trusting a toddler not to drink the Drano under the kitchen sink. I think you have your head in the sand about your own kids. Who's the terrible parent, huh? The one who lets her toddler drink Drano?

An excellent question. Was it just Landon students involved? Were the students held accountable when school resumed in the Fall?

Huh? And if it were your daughter?

I can tell you that MY ninth grade son will have assigned reading tonight, and several chats in the days to come. And this is for a kid who, when he is brash and hormonal, makes stupid jokes in front of girls he admires...

Um, this would not be any son of mine that would have so little respect for girls and women as to treat them in anything but an honorable way. Anyone who supports this behaviour deserves to be attacked themselves and see how they like it. It's always the innocent who suffer and are the targets of crime. I wish some of the know it alls would get what's coming to them.

No one should be too surprised when their boys are in a group that does something stupid. You can correctly view your son as a good, caring, honest and forthright young man--taken as an individual. However, when teenage boys get in a group, collective stupidity often cancels out the individual wisdom. Much like the saying "nothing good happens after midnight" it is true that nothing good happens after the group expands above 3 (even then there are no guarantees)

[Hello moron...because they are minors and many other reasons.

That is lame...makes it sound as though boys are helpless to control their OWN behavior when they are in a group.

Clearly a troll (or a Landon alum).

Landon graduates excel outside of school. I've heard some schools like GDS thrown around this forum a lot, and I'll say it flat out. Landon is a better school than GDS. [b]Most of my sons' friends from Landon are a few years out of college and many of them are making over $100,000 a year or are attending top tier graduate programs. [b]I find it ironic that many of their Sidwell and GDS counterparts are taking 5+ years to finish college, struggling to find jobs, or are wasting their lives as bartenders and waiters.

Landon is an institution that teaches kids how to excel. It's not an easy education and will never be perfectly understood from the outside.

After all, it is not the critic who counts, but the man actually in the arena. He lives a world apart from those weak and timid souls that know neither the thrill of victory nor defeat.

This says it all.

No need to even comment on the rest.

PP 15:37 Yes this is sick behavior. Landon WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THESE BOYS. Failure to stand up to these kids is killing the school. I really feel for the good kids who attend Landon.

This was a large website with lots of girls listed. Landon knew about the site and suspended the boys for a couple of days. What about the girls who were listed on the site? This is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Agree how hideous it is for someone to comment on the salaries...as though money is more important than ethics/values/morales...or that making money means that people don't have to worry about those virtues.

Indeed. The quintessential, nouveau riche, blowhard culture that dominates that school at all levels.
