The pitbulls have already been put down. These were legal pets that had been family pets for 8 years without incident and there was a parent present - I don't know how they could charge them with child endangerment.

The only thing that worked was when one of the adults grabbed an axe and started swinging it at the pit. Impossible to ever get these images out of my head. It was hard to describe the grip the pit had and then the quickness where it would let go to lunge at the adults and then regrip the golden. Impossible to describe. The golden barely lived and had to have extensive surgery and then never fully recovered bc of trachea damage. What a horrible last few months for a sweet dog. The pit had been on a leash but of course the owner couldn’t control it once it decided to attack. You pit bull excusers make me sick bc what you allow in your house is up to you but things like this show your poor decisions impact others.

My friend and I were chased by two pit bulls 25 years ago. The dogs tore down the fence between her yard and there’s. We made it to her kitchen door, but her older dog didn’t make it. We watched with my friends mom while these two dogs mauled their dog to death. All we could do was call 911. It was unprovoked, savage, and haunts me to this day. If those dogs had caught me or my friend, we would be dead. Anyone who defends and excuses this breed is inhuman.

If you were attacked by a white woman would you say all white women should be banned?

Your story is horrific but defenders of pit bulls are human and pit bulls are dogs.

Exhibit A of Pit owner stupidity.

Yeah that's one of the more bizarre ones. Dogs are selectively bred. My grandma's golden liked to swim. My cairn terrier hated swimming but liked to dig and catch rodents. My MIL'S border collie herds.

And pits have been bred to fight and kill.
my lab/retriever mix almost drowned the first time he went swimming. Had to go to swim lessons. Now he will barely take his feet off the bottom but can swim if he needs to. They do not act the same way just because they’re the same breed.

Your lab being an exception doesn't mean labs weren't selectively bred. Comparing dogs to people is offensive and racist.

I hate pit bulls. We've been looking for a dog and there's a truly scary "rescue complex" about these dogs.

I read that the baby will literally torn in half. This is nothing like a bite in the hand from any other dog. They have something Bred into them that when they snap (you never know when it will be of course ), they want to kill even if it means that they will die and too. I posted earlier about gameness which is what was bred into them. They don’t have to be abused to act this way which is why they don’t belong in society Just like we don’t allow tigers to be walked down the street either

As a young man I spent some time in the Dominican Republic. That is where I saw my first dog fight and HOLY smokes lemme tell you pal, that was carnage in the first degree.

Been a while but those images, sounds and intensity never leaves one’s memory. So whenever I see someone out with their pit I often think; this individual has. NEVER seen a good dog fight. Because if they had, they’d a dialed the pound that very day!

Fun facts:

19th century England there was a need to eliminate Rats from stables as they would bite livestock and horses. There were people who bred bulldogs to go into livestock pens and get the rats. Quick, muscular and fearless of the larger livestock. They would challenge others to see “who could kill the most rats in a sanctioned event” this was held in a livestock auction “pit” where gentlemen would make sport of it and bet on certain dogs. Live Rats would be dumped into the ring and each dog would try to “catch” more than the other by shaking them dead and bringing them to his master during the melee.

Occasionally the dogs would compete at the same time and in the ruckus of trying to catch rats and attack each other. The crowds likened to this aspect and the dog breeders took note.

They then started breeding the agressive/faster terriers of the day with the stoutest bulldogs. This became the bull terrier. The pit aspect stayed the same but the rats weren’t needed.

This was the Pit Bull Terrior. Englishmen brought these animals tk the states with them when emigrating and they became a staple of the American frontier as guard dogs, companions and prairie pals. But their impetus was specifically to fight and shred apart one another.

Make no mistake. It’s most certainly “the breed and the breeder”

Bans literally exist in municipalities and countries around the world. Whether or not they are enforced or skirted is another thing, but they have been banned at times.

We also need to stop shelters from adopting out dangerous dogs. The number of postings full of red flags and they're releasing the dogs out into the community.

Anonymous wrote:Anyone with young kids should have to look at photos from this mauling before they decide to adopt a pit Bull. I love dogs and I love that my kids are growing up with pets — a lab/hound mix (actual, not a pit mix that is called something else) and a cat. But there is no potential benefit from owning a pet that would ever make me take the risk (even if small from no that particular dog) of having a pit, rottie, or any other dog that could do serious damage to my kids. This is just heartbreaking. What were these parents thinking?

I guarantee there was literally nothing left of that baby. Nothing.

I have a 5 month old and thinking about this makes me feel seriously ill. I feel so bad for the first responders to that scene.

JFC. You pitbull overs are determined to make yourselves sound crazy. Also, there are no “breeds” of humans so your analogy falls flat.

Also about 25 years ago a pit bull chased me neighbor who found safety on top of a car, then ran after me. I was two houses down and across the street. I barely made it into my car. Dog then ran into my fenced backyard where it was shot by the police. Neighbor couldn’t control his dog after the dog jumped their fence. I was thankful that we didn’t have to worry that the dog would be returned to the neighbor. Not sure the neighbor was upset at losing the dog and not sure who called 911- no one ever admitted to it. We were all lucky because this could have ended badly. And to this day I don’t leave my house without looking outside to be sure there are no dogs running loose.

Pit Bulls are banned in the UK and are illegal there.

The only answers I can think of are things like greater civil consequences (strict liability, no “one bite” rule) because people may think twice about what type of dog they own if they know they can get sued up the wazoo or lose their homeowners coverage if their dog hurts someone. This seems like one of those things the private market could figure out if insurers had to minimize risk/losses. Plus breed restrictions in rentals. Make it impossible for people to find a home to live with these dogs.

Also, better enforcement of existing things like leash laws. So many of these maulings involve packs of dogs whose owners let them just wander the neighborhood and the authorities never do anything despite complaints. Also, restrictions on how many dogs you can have since it seems attacks are more likely when there are multiple vs. one dog. If you live in a dense residential area, you don’t need to have 2+ large dogs.

^^ Also vet offices should charge outrageous hazard fees for dealing with the dogs. We need to make pit bull ownership absolute misery.
