Moderately MoCo did a Q&A and has endorsements. I don't agree with all of them, but it's place to start. https://moderatelymoco.com/moderately-moco-recommended-ballot-for-2022-primary-and-questionnaire-responses-post/ |
Yeah the school board recs are a bit wack! |
| I’m a liberal Democrat, and Blair has my vote! I’m done with Elrich after the pandemic and his utter hypocrisy. Time for a new start. |
A bit? Those are the three I would absolutely not vote for - nut jobs every one of them! And yes, I want to get rid of the incumbent BOE members, they are awful. |
How have they done that? Specifically? Or is it more likely that increase awareness of police violence against civilians nationwide has diminished public confidence in the institution of policing? https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/08/12/americans-confidence-police-falls-new-low-gallup-poll-shows/3352910001/ |
Can I ask who you are leaning towards? For some of the candidates I am just not finding a lot of information, plus I feel like one of the problems with this current board is unwillingness to push back at MCPS and ask tough questions. It’s hard to gauge who will do that! I like Valerie Coll (former teacher at our neighborhood school) but am struggling with some of the other ones (except to say that I am wary of the moderately MoCo endorsers ones too). |
Yes, it is understandable that public confidence in policing has diminished nationwide. My concern is that more vocal members of this council have used nationwide data and applied it directly to MCPD, which has historically been a very well-run and well-regarded department. It has often been considered a strong example for other departments, and MCPD often sends their officers to be chiefs elsewhere. Instead of looking at the strengths of our current department, council members took the easy road and decided to paint MCPD as in need of desperate reform. Yes, reform is GOOD and improvements can always be made, but not when it is hastily considered without input from people who actually have experience with the job. I have been paying attention and haven't heard anything from Riemer or Elrich about attending the citizen's academy, doing ride-alongs, etc. It appears to me that they don't think they can benefit from learning more about the MCPD experience. Therefore, officers suffer. For example, the council-driven Reimagining Public Safety Task Force calls for a 50% reduction in policing in Wheaton and Silver Spring, two areas that are already severely understaffed. Police officers are being asked to do more with severely less right now and it has taken a dramatic hit on their morale. Reducing the number of police does not reduce crime in those areas. Things that used to make MCPD very appealing no longer do. The word is out that MCPD does not have the support of the council and yes, that is hurting recruitment numbers. We can also see this in salary. MCPD used to be among the highest paid in the region, and now we are 2nd to last. Recruits who would have considered a career here are now turning elsewhere, to counties that compensate better and treat their officers better. It's cutting off your nose to save your face. If you want a strong police department, you need to support your officers instead of tearing them down. |
Not that poster, but trying to get a more moderate slate in there. Traditional liberal rather than progressive, because while I agree morally with progressive ideas, county leadership just blows things up in the name of progressivism and they do more harm than good. I'm all for evidence-based improvements. My ideal slate: CE: Blair Council: Friedson: District 1 Balcombe: District 2 Katz: District 3 Ginsberg: District 4 Koroma: District 5 Lazo: District 6 Manger or Luedtke: District 7 (my district, and I haven't been able to choose yet between these two). Council At Large: Albornoz Glass Goldberg (not sure about a 4th) Hucker sucks, Jawando is a loose cannon. I would like Sayles but she doesn't seem very solid on the issues. At least not the issues I care about. Sheriff: Max Uy State's Attorney: DeGonia Clerk: Bushnell Board of Ed: District 1: Grace Rivera Oven District 3: Julie Yang District 5: Valerie Coll At Large: Not sure. |
Still wondering why so many people view lack of actual government experiences as a plus. Also wondering why so few Blair supporters on this site support their positions with actual specifics. I guess my takeaway should be to recognize how limited using a site like this can be when it comes to getting detailed information on even prominent local candidates. I’m planning to vote for Elrich — unless I can get information that goes beyond the level of the stuff that gets put on campaign flyers for Blair. |
For me, it’s Blair’s proven experience as a leader: https://www.ahealthieramerica.org/articles/david-blair-board-member-445 Perhaps it isn’t experience in county politics, but I am confident his proven skills translate easily from the business world to the county exec position. I want a person who can put good people in place and then support those people as they perform their jobs. Blair’s experience in the business world proves to me that he can do that. |
That is my post above. I am voting the following for BOE: At Large - J. Domenica Giandomenico 1 - Grace Rivera-Owen 3 - Julie Yang 5 - Valerie Coll |
True. I was going to say that people in government are messing everything up. But that's not quite true. It's a lack of leadership -- more specifically -- people who can't work well with others that's messing everything up. Elrich and Jawando are prime examples. One has government experience. The other didn't have much when elected. There is no leadership there. Just self-serving pandering to their base. |
Thank you! I appreciate your response. |
DP and for me it’s not that the lack of local government experience is a plus, I just don’t view it as a negative. You have to start somewhere and I think Blair’s ripe if experience would translate well to county executive. And while the other two candidates have years of local govt experience, neither are particularly good at their jobs. I find flyers/texts pretty useless too but you can learn much more at the campaign websites. |
