Moderates- Eleich or Blair

I’ve been very turned off by Blair — both in person, and as I read the many, many flyers and emails that I’ve been sent. (How exactly did he get my personal email, anyway?) In contrast, I’ve found Elrich’s emails informative and helpful. I’m also very pleased with the way COVID was handled on his watch.

If you are pleased about the way COVID was handled in MoCo, you are not a moderate. MoCo COVID response was political and virtue signaling.

Just a few examples of his fiscal mismanagement:

1) I want to help the environment, but drastic changes at a county level, with no outside funding, just doesn't make sense. I've used this analogy before here -- MoCo's attempt to dent climate change is like me trimming my nails to lose weight. It has to be a global effort, or at least a national one, and we are foolish to spend county tax dollars on significant changes. We should be leveraging federal funding to the fullest extent possible. I'm not saying we should ignore the need for upgrades. We should do it, but on a smaller more sustainable scale. Elrich just implemented a Net Zero policy on government capital projects -- they can't use more energy than they create -- adding 10% or more to the cost of every single project.

2) He is in bed with the unions, so he gave them outrageously high hazard pay during covid (far, far higher than surrounding jurisdictions) and there were almost no decent mechanisms in place to ensure compliance, so there was a lot of fraud. He promised that FEMA would reimburse the county, but I think he ended up with maybe 20% reimbursed. He gave VOLUNTEER firefighters hazard pay. People who don't have to work.

3) He raided the OPEB fund that prefunds retiree health benefits. This OPEB fund is required by Government Accounting Standards Board and required to maintain our AAA bond rating. There is a formal process to go through before using these funds differently, and he just circumvented it.

OPEB was Elrich or the Council? Pretty sure that was the Council.

This is a sincere question: will you explain why? I don’t see one redeeming quality in Reimer and am interested in hearing what a Reimer voter sees in him.

Because I don't trust Blair; he is not a traditional Democrat. Blair is a developer backed candidate and I am wary of his intentions. Elrich is Elrich, I have never been a fan of his.

What we have are three bad choices.

Elrich can't get along with anyone, and doesn't know what the word compromise means, and therefore gets nothing done.

Reimer is a liar. Everyone he talks to, he tells them exacy what he knows they want to hear. Believes himself when he tells people he will get it done (he has been on the Council 12 years and is a big part of the problem, not the solution)

Blair is a former Republican, and a businessman. He has not been involved in government and has no idea how things work. Will likely have some giveaways to his wealthy friends.

Vote for who you feel is the least bad. For me, it's Blair. Montgomery County cannot take another Elrich administration, or a massive loss under Reimer. Blair may help his friends a bit, but hopefully will also fix some of the mess created by Elrich and Reimer, and even more hope, maybe he will entice more businesses to move here.

Hams Riemer is untrustworthy and has and will lie to get any position they want.

You don’t trust Blair, yet Reimer has proven time and time again that he can’t be trusted. If you want to trust a candidate, wouldn’t Reimer be the worst to vote for?

Nope. Elrich. Council fixed it. Every fiscal disaster Elrich has created is documented when it gets to Council. I don't agree with everything Council has done with his proposals or fiascos. But they originate squarely with him.

"The Council’s budget process has been consumed by the pandemic for the last two years – which
led to a same services budget in FY21 and modest increases in the FY22 budget largely
attributable to one-time Federal resources.
• The County Executive’s recommended FY23 Operating Budget communicates a very different
narrative compared to the past two years. The Executive’s budget includes unprecedented
growth in both projected revenues and recommended expenditures in FY23.
• The level of budget growth proposed by the Executive has not been seen since the Great
Recession and funds substantial programmatic and/or staffing enhancements across all County
agencies.
• Council staff has significant concerns about the sustainability of the unprecedented level of
spending, use of one-time resources, and multi-year funding commitments included in the
recommended budget:
o The Executive’s assumed budget growth is a historical outlier, with FY23 revenues
supported by the County’s most volatile taxes and one-time resources.
o The Executive’s recommended use of $20 million in OPEB Trust assets to pay current year
retiree health costs does not align with current fiscal policies.
o The Executive’s recommended expenditures may create a structural imbalance as early
as FY24 based on the assumed revenue growth in FY24-28.

I’ve got news for you. Hans Riemer loooooooves developers. He wrote the bill to give them tax breaks for 15 years for building more density. Riemer is probably worse on development than Blair. Elrich is the only moderate when it comes to developers and development.

Hans Riemer is the developer backed candidate. He just asked that they not donate more than $500 or whatever so he can get public financing. His donors are a who’s who of developers and land use attorneys in this county. There is a guy I know that works for JBG Smith and has a Riemer sign out front his house.

Elrich isn’t a moderate on development. He’s anti development. That’s not moderate.

If you use phrases like “virtue signaling”, YOU are not a moderate. Too bad so many people choose judgemental PITAness over respectful conversations.

And Riemer is also not a moderate, but in the other direction. Elrich hates developers making profit and Riemer loves helping developers make a profit, even at the expense of the county and economic development.
