lunch is included in the tuition at our private. so definitely not free.... but there are also kids there on scholarship so I suppose it nets out similarly to public school in that children with financial needs are fed.

From what I've read, the lunch question is more useful for the private school students because Fairfax already has information on all public school students and their qualification for free or reduced meal.
If you are in public school then there is no right or wrong answer because the question could be interpreted different ways since all students have been getting free lunch for the past year and a half.
If you are in private school then the lunch question is very clear and you checked YES, will they verify that or take it at face value?

I am saying this because I want to dispel the the meal conspiracy theory as far as public school students are concerned.

I wonder if any kids who lied about the lunch question were admitted. Were they penalized for their parents lack of ethics?

I am happy for her since she is happy about it but also not sure yet if going is the best decision for her. She’s a really introverted and anxious kid. She does awesome at math and it seems to come pretty naturally for her but she really has not been that interested in her science classes. She wants to do band and she does a year round sport already.

Any parents of similar kids? What did you do / are you doing?

TJ Marching Colonials is an exceptional community and will give her a wonderful intro to the school and a great support network. Strongly suggest you give it a shot. If she’s also a year round athlete she will probably have a great shot at Varsity as a freshman. TJ’s girls soccer team just won their district championship last night!

Enjoy freshmen preview!

This is correct.

if s student is qualified for free meal in the school system but didn't answer the meal question, would the admission checks school record or just assume it is "no".

Longfellow. Both 4.0+ students. One white; one Latinx.

They use unweighted gpa so there are no 4.0+; same here, Longfellow, unweighted gpa of 4.0, geometry, waitlisted

WL from private school. Checked all boxes: perfect grades, very strong writer, advanced math (algebra II proficiency), lots of EC, and admitted to every high school private to which DC applied. Do kids ever get off waitlist? Is there a lottery component to this if not at a public school or live in Fairfax? Not sure what more could have been done here.

Did he write what he has done in the SPS essay?. Unless he tells there is no way of knowing particularly from private school.

Also what are these acronmys I see: DC and DD?

From what I read in other posts about 2-3% can become available particularly if Loudoun kids do not accept and decide to go to their AES school or if somebody doesn't accept. For example there are a couple from Longfellow who got admission but planning to move out of state. For now they may accept but if they move that seat becomes vacant so there are chances but there are lots of highly deserving kids from Longfellow and Carson who are in waitlist as well and who were part of Longfellow Science Olympiad and science bowl teams which made to nationals.

Keep in mind that there are 2,000 applicants and I would guess that a lot of those 2,000 kids have a similar profile. There are only 500 spots. Lots of kids that are very deserving were not accepted and their parents are asking the same question that you are asking.

Thanks for the info! Very helpful. DC: darling child; DD: darling daughter. No doubt so many deserving kids were not accepted given the limited criteria they evaluated and limited slots. Does anyone happen to know how many applicants are in the waitpool? Another 500? Or more like everyone, so no one feels rejected outright?

They reserved more spaces for the disadvantaged so there is less room for the others. What was once a competitive process became super competitive because of the fewer slots. Finally, the essays may distinguish between similarly qualified applicants.
