Why must it be a half acre? Why would you even expect this in/around a city? Do you really like to mow the lawn?

I mean this isn't a half acre, but the yard is fine...

Or here, again, yard is fine. Do you need backyard chickens or something?

Can you do your current jobs from Georgia/Alabama? If so, why not move? If you want a half-acre lot it sounds like you really prioritize not being close to neighbors, so it doesn't make sense to live in a large urban/suburban area.

It's funny because those areas are actually quite nice. They're like the middle Fairfax. Why won't someone suggest Rose Hill, Springfield, Annandale or Mt. Vernon? I guess those aren't even mentionable.

I never understood the hate that Springfield and Burke get on this forum. But they love the tiny shacks with no yard in Bethesda/Arlington. So bizarre.

And for those accusing troll. We want to spend max $720. For our salary, etc. it is upsetting we can't get what we want.

OP, we make $350k a year. My neighborhood in Lorton is half acre lots, but the houses are all built in the 60s. A complete gut job just sold for $700. What you want does not exist in 2022.

ok, well I want gas to cost $1.34 a gallon and an ice cream cone should be 99 cents. But the market doesn't owe you--or me--anything. You are not entitled to the house of your dreams at whatever price you want it to be.

You are still in a better position than 99+% of people in the world. You can choose to be happy about that (and maybe even help others who are less fortunate than you) or you can choose to be bitter. It seems sad to spend your extremely lucky and comfortable life being disgusted and deflated, but that's a choice you can make.

There are still unrenovated "gut job" SFHs in Fairfax area selling in the $500s on larger lots, and even some perfectly livable houses in the low $600s like this one in Woodson on a normal sized lot for the area.

We are moving into a bigger house and are renting our existing house to a DC couple who decided to move here for exactly this reason. They are so excited to rent our modest house (until they find one to buy). They said it would be 2M in DC which is depressing for DC people. Anyway, just wanted to provide this anecdote. Maybe moving to another area isn’t so bad.

I’m from Gainesville. Talk about depressing.

I’m the PP, fro
I’m from NY (Westchester) originally and I actually love it here.
Call me nuts, but the weather is perfect apart from muggy July and August. I live in a community called Haile Plantation where everything is walkable. I do travel for work about 5-6 times per year, and this helps me feel connected to larger society. We go to Europe every summer for vacation since cost of living here is affordable. We also drive for beach vacations over spring break to Naples or Clearwater, which is much simpler than flying.
Great place to raise kids.
University of Florida raises its profile more every year which is good for my husband.
Life is good, no complaints.

Oh, and I will add that our HHI is a little more than 350k and we live in 3100 sqft house on half an acre walkable to coffee shops, grocery store, tennis courts, restaurants, and bought our house for 625k 2 years ago.

If OP feels so strongly about all of the priorities he listed and housing costs relative to his salary he should just move.

,

Stafford, maybe Woodbridge, or for a true acreage, Fort Royal.

I live in West Springfield where very nice townhomes with postage stamp back yards sell for $650k.

You definitely don’t need a half acre for chickens.
