Which math class?

Beyond calculus.

If tonight is a rejection (and based on the percentage of EA deferred kids who get in, that is by far the most likely outcome at this point), I am going to be annoyed [insert stronger language here]. Kid goes to a large Arlington HS, has a 3.96 GPA/4.53 wGPA, a 35 ACT, is a full IB-diploma candidate, has taken 5 AP classes plus a Dual-Enrollment class, is an Eagle Scout, a varsity athlete, and a super strong club sport athlete as well. Other than applying ED, not sure what else he could have done. Based on the Naviance scatterplots, it should not be a close call (nothing but green below and to the left of his spot), but I suppose we'll see in a few hours.

This is my kid. Waitlisted. Honestly kind of stunned.

As you should be. That is honestly crazy to me. I would absolutely be a rage monster. So sorry for your kid - I hope that he gets off the waitlist if UVA is still where he want to be.

I am really sorry for your kid. Deserved better with that amazing resume. Completely their loss. Good luck where he ends up. I hope he applied to Ivy and gets in.

Happened to us, too - yield protection - they think you will pick another school.

And we did.

I know it is cold comfort, but try to remind your kid and yourself that it is NOT a sign of personal failure. It ends up being pretty arbitrary. Admissions officers are not superhuman. They get tired and burnt out and one 4.4 GPA/1590 SAT kid gets in and another does not.

Why? Maybe they already admitted two similar kids from the same high school and your DC's file was unfortunately read last. Maybe they already admitted too many boys, or girls. Maybe they have too may people who want to major in physics. Etc.

Basically, they could eliminate the bottom third of the applicant pool on stats alone and fill the rest of the class by lottery, because every other applicant is qualified, and no one would every be able to see any quality difference.

What about accepting more of the high performing kids from VA?

DD is in RD. OOS; legacy. 4.0 uw from high-end DMV private (probbaly first in class). 1580. 2 SAT2s, both 800. Varsity athlete + other ECs with leadership. Math beyond calculus, stats, advanced bio + physics.

Right. Sorry but that PP Eagle Scout kid being in state and not getting in is messed up. Someone like that should always get into their state flagship. It isn’t right

Also in state, one legacy parent, very rigorous schedule at very challenging schools, and tons of 5s on APs …

1530/4.4, FCPS, rejected. Got into VT and received a cipher card from W&M so not too upset.

Once any school creates an ED option, one best choose it (and don’t throw ED away on an
Ivy lottery, unless of course you’re hooked).

50,000 applications. You can do everything right and still not make it when you’re talking about that many.

UVA is small, but not the only good school in Virginia.

Anonymous wrote:This year was carnage. I also think that no matter what they say, UVA goes for high stats kids every time over kids with lower GPAs from more rigorous schools. From a USNews rankings perspective, they have zero incentive to distinguish between the kid who got a great GPA due to pandemic grade inflation and the kid who earned the same GPA at a more rigorous school: USNews doesn't ask for squishy measures of rigor, just for the raw numbers.

Oh- and girls have a disadvantage across the board, b/c when it comes to college admission everywhere except tech schools, we are now in the universe of affirmative action for men.

You’re forgetting that they have plenty to choose from who are high rigor AND high stats. It’s not like it’s an either/or.

Anonymous wrote:Best of luck to the applicants. Show grace. It’s hard to overstate how much this emotionally affects a lot of nova families.

It’s not just emotionally -it’s a huge financial problem for some Virginia families -that’s why so many families who have high stats kids get upset when their kids are passed over by TJ for social engineering goals of more first-generations. Many of these kids’ families (TJ) included really need access the the top Virginia schools. Many also are saving for other children and for grad schools do a thumbs down at top VA schools can be a huge financial problem problem.

Get a grip. No one "needs" (versus wants) access to TJ or UVA. Do you really think these kids' lives will be ruined if they attend VT or, God forbid, JMU? Plus, if they have really high stats, they can get lots of merit aid from very good private or OOS schools. This obsession with top tier schools is ridiculous.

You missed the point -lots of TJ families can only afford VT for their engineering/computer science/high tech kids. They are being passed over for students with less higher states because they are first generation or URM. If the Commonwealth’s best tech students can’t get into VT (which is huge compared to UVA), there is something wrong with the Commonwealth’s system

No, these families could also afford engineering programs at other Virginia public schools, like VCU. Granted, those schools aren't nearly as highly ranked, but it's their choice if they'd rather not study engineering at all if they can't get into VT. (If I can't have the shiny toy, I don't want any toy at all!) Plus, as I noted earlier, there are plenty of very strong (i.e., much stronger than VCU) schools with engineering programs outside of Virginia that offer lots of merit aid for high stats kids -- meaning they can be just as affordable, if not more so, than VT. Plus, with the increased focus on diversity (which is strongly needed), URMs or first generation students are not being passed over for white kids with the same stats.

Sigh. Back in the day, which was 33 years ago, UVA was my safety school. I seriously doubt I would be able to get in today.

But it will all work out. All our kids are smart and hardworking and generally awesome, and they will all do well.

I am so sorry. That should not be the case - and race should not even be a required piece of the app.

UVA is not a safety school for anyone... even Ivy admits. Todays admission is too unpredictable. Even Tech isn't a safety school anymore for anyone.
