Explain 17:19 then. Perfect everything… but not first generation or URM. That kid should have gotten in |
ugh that is CRAZY |
Oh I’m so sorry. This is nuts. He sounds like an amazing kid. I hope he isn’t taking it too badly. |
Highest math? |
Yes. But Asian male. |
I am really sorry for your kid. Deserved better with that amazing resume. Completely their loss. Good luck where he ends up. I hope he applied to Ivy and gets in. |
Passed over? You're kid isn't entitled to a spot at TJ. |
Mine was flat out rejected, 4.3, TO, double legacy, with a job and a paid IT internship, varsity athlete. He wa happy for the rejection so there was no additional hoping. Deferral to rejection is a ride. |
I meant rejected EA. |

Again-- UVA could fill its class several times over with kids with near-perfect stats. They just can't take them all. And they are trying to balance kids in the different undergraduate schools and majors, too.
I know it is cold comfort, but try to remind your kid and yourself that it is NOT a sign of personal failure. It ends up being pretty arbitrary. Admissions officers are not superhuman. They get tired and burnt out and one 4.4 GPA/1590 SAT kid gets in and another does not. Why? Maybe they already admitted two similar kids from the same high school and your DC's file was unfortunately read last. Maybe they already admitted too many boys, or girls. Maybe they have too may people who want to major in physics. Etc. Basically, they could eliminate the bottom third of the applicant pool on stats alone and fill the rest of the class by lottery, because every other applicant is qualified, and no one would every be able to see any quality difference. |
| If it’s any solace, I know two kids who were rejected in 2020 that transferred in successfully in 2021. If it is meant to be, it can still happen. |
Which math class? |
Or maybe they discriminate against Asians and kids from NOVA even though we are the population and funding center of the state. |

For kids who were waitlisted: if UVa remains top choice, but they don't get in off the waitlist this spring/summer, don't forget this option:
"We are offering Virginians who were placed on the wait list for the College of Arts and Sciences the opportunity to enroll at the UVA College at Wise located in Southwest Virginia for one year before automatically enrolling at UVA in Charlottesville. Students in this program must complete 30 hours of transferrable credit post high school graduation at UVA-Wise with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better to transfer into the College of Arts and Sciences at UVA. You may accept this option and continue to remain on the wait list for first year admission to UVA. Read more about this option on the UVA College at Wise website." https://www.uvawise.edu/admissions/uva-deferred-admission-agreement |
