What???????? Really? OMG! I can't believe it. Are you in-state?

Yes we are in-state. Very upsetting.

This is nuts!!!! I would love to hear UMD's explanation. This is crazy! An outrage! Is your kid in public school?

What major??

The major doesn't matter. Kids are first accepted into UMD. Then they are accepted into their major.

Are you a resident? What top 10?

(Congrats on that)

Junior parent here. This is depressing. Our MCPS kid is considering UMD as a reach next year. but seeing the rejections for kids with higher stats than our kid will have, it seems impossible. Yikes.

Honors College, CS, Asian-American Male.
MCPS magnet, 1590 SAT/4.0 u/4.8 w/12 APs

ECs, honors, internship, awards, community service etc were also pretty impressive considering the COVID disruption for 10th and 11th grade.
Not athlete, no hooks, in-state.

Congratulations to your son! He sounds very impressive!

Why do they have spring admission?

What does student do in the fall? [/quote

Kids who are Spring admits can join a program called Freshman Connection. That allows students to take freshman classes they would normally take only later in the day with Freshman Connection students. Supposedly the classes are smaller than regular classes which is a real advantage. The kids are freshmen like all the other freshmen. They live in the same dorms, participate in the same activities only they attend classes specifically designated for them. Everyone I know who has a kid who did this program thought is was great and provided a wonderful start for their kid at UMD. In the Spring, the kids join the other freshman in their humongo classes. All good!

Yes, and do not have access to fall classes before 3pm

Congratulations! Isn’t the hook Asian American, or is affirmative action not considered a hook?

DS admired directly into Smith School of Business. May not be as common, I guess?

It sounds like UMD had a lot of applications this year, so they were very, very picky, much moreso than in prior years.

I remember when you could basically walk into UMD with a high school diploma. C's were fine. No more. It's getting closer to UVa in selectivity.

It's pretty shocking the stats of kids who were rejected. I guess it's starting to turn into one of those lottery schools.

That is insane. No way any OOS should get in before your kid.

Uh no, Asian Americans are not white. Maybe you mean not under-represented?
