So 32,617 of the 50,306 applications in 2021 were from OOS?! That's nuts. Clearly, UMD's on the map.

UMD is a HOT SCHOOL in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and among lots of Jews. UMD has one of the best Hillels in the country. It has a kosher dining hall which is very attractive to Jews who keep kosher. So yes, UMD is clearly on the map and its just getting hotter and hotter. I laugh when people denigrate UMD, because it is becoming more and more competitive to get into for a reason!

When my sister applied there back in the early 80's, she dropped off her application in person and was told right there and then that she was accepted and was offered a place in the Honors College!

The common application first started in 1975 but on a small scale. It went into wide use in 2007. The common app is not driving this situation. It's the test optional policy that's in place everywhere that is driving the number of applications. It's being driven by applicants who would not have applied if they had to present a SAT score.

Yes, I agree that test-optional had some influence but UMD didn't participate in the common app until 2020-2021 admissions cycle. A lot easier for students to apply.

Interesting thoughts, thanks.

Actually makes me question the value of using standardized tests for admission purposes.

OK I guess it was the coalition app that was in place.

I'm a VA mom of a 9th grader and UMD is my child's #1 school. Wants CS. Wants to be close-ish to home and wants a decent black population. UMD fits the bill. He's concerned by 2025 it will be so hot he won't stand a chance.

Have you compared in-state costs to OOS MD? You’re sitting in a state full of terrific diverse in-state options

UMD does consider legacy. It says so in the admissions criteria. Not a big help, but they do consider it. Both my kids got in and are legacy.

UMDCP is hot and is a tough admit. I’m not a MD resident and don’t have a kid there, but it’s nice to see for the DMV. It will be fun to watch its star continuing to rise.

Has he looked at George Mason? It seems a perfect fit for all the criteria you mention.
