Racism and bigotry are a real, ongoing problem in society and lacrosse is not some 'safe haven.' Bias is a real issue.
That being said, no way any ref is going to call a penalty on a middle school girl simply for yelling 'Got ball!' when she is on defense. And the fact that WaPo and the G family tried to highlight that incident and pass it off as a true, prime example of 'racism in the sport' is disingenuous at best. The editor should have demanded more context or removed that paragraph entirely because it just isn't credible. I'd love to see the game film of that incident. Would it show a 'racist ref' taking out bias on an innocent kid communicating with her teammates the way her coaches taught her? Or, more likely, did the young lady in question do something else that led to the penalty? WaPo's attempt to gloss over the details of that incident undercut the credibility of other parts of the story. But it doesn't mean the entire premise is false. I accept what others in this forum pointed out: white kids on teams have the exact same experiences of being told to play D if they are fast, or don't get passed to by certain players on a cliquey team.
Still, it is SAD that this young woman is the only Black player on the U-16 team and that just shows USA Lacrosse has a ways to go to get kids interested in the sport.
30% of MD is Black. 50% of DC is Black. Most local youth lacrosse rosters don't come close to reflecting that. The lacrosse community should be doing more to be inclusive. It would benefit the kids, the sport, and the community.

There are lots of things white supremacists do that are absurd and hard to believe. I have been around long enough to know these things happen. I believe what the girl says happened and worse has probably happened where she was probably too busy being a kid to notice.

Did it occur to you that reflexively calling everybody a racist and white supremacist actually hurts your cause?

Who says everyone is a white supremacist. However, if someone’s behavior is consistent with white supremacist behavior, I think it’s fair to suspect thy may be a white supremacist. And when someone sees white supremacy and they turn a blind eye to it, that’s a soft way to supporting white supremacy.

Can we agree that the person who wrote the post beginning "maybe we can stop name calling" has not said or done anything to justify being called a racist or white supremacist, and that calling him/her a name like that would be wrong?

I didn’t see anything racist in the post that started the topic, however the post at 17:26 is a little suspect to me because the person is attempting to discredit the story that the family is telling because she doesn’t think anyone could be so racist. She wasn’t there, but is telling a family that they didn’t see what they say they say. Since denial of racism is something white supremacists due, I think it’s appropriate to suspect this person could be a white supremacist. But they may not be one.

Even if the parents were 100% correct, that a ref gave a red card to a minority player solely because she yelled "Got Ball", as unlikely as that is, the still are making the ASSUMPTION the ref acted based on her color and only her color, that's something no parent or coach or fan could possibly know.

The problem with this "Article" is, there was zero context provided. ZERO. NOBODY who is of a reasonable mind would conclude what was said was reality.

Agreed. That’s it impossible for us to know if it was solely because of color, except her parents where there and they said so. Maybe if they went into all the minor details, it would be more definitive. Racism is common in today’s world and throughout the documented history of the United States so it doesn’t sound so far fetched to me. Especially, when blacks are ad small of a minority as in a situation such as a lacrosse game. When someone says they don’t believe a Black person has experienced racism when they say they have just because they didn’t share every little detail just sounds racist to me. Maybe my perception is wrong and maybe yours is wrong too.

So you are saying that when a black person accuses a white person of racism, no matter how far fetched (ie, a ref gave a red card for saying "I got ball," because the ref is racist), the white person has to accept the claim at face value, or else in your book, the white person is a racist?

Because white people have gotten horrible calls against them and white people get sent to bench or forced to play other than desirable positions.

White people also get poor service from waitstaff and also get pulled over for perceived minor infractions.

So, you see, those stories, doesn’t prove racism because we know that’s just a product of living in the real world.

Idk why these Black people do all this complaining. White people are really the ones being discriminated against most of the time.

This thread proves there are idiots of all races with hot takes. The people on here who are essentially trying to claim that racism doesn't exist are small minded and inadvertently proving that bias and bigotry are all too common in our society. The people on here who claim that every word of that story -- even one-sided opinions not grounded in fact -- are 100% true are also not very bright.

Replace thread with "articles" and I think you hit the nail on the head.

That’s right, just pretend these things never occur.

Can we all agree that when these things occur, it should not be tolerated and it those responsible must be held accountable. Conversely, throwing around baseless accusations only hurts the real cases where it occurs. Nothing in this article proves anything, doesn't even hint at it. Name names. What coach played her only on defense despite her being middie level talent. Let's here that coaches story. What game did the ref call the red call? Likely its on film somewhere, let's see the play.

Did we forget about the Duke Lacrosse scandal already? A inept DA tried to ruin a few kid's lives because of political pressure.

Again, I feel bad for the 15 yr old, she is being used by the Post and it some extent her parents. She lacks the maturity and the life experience to realize the damage this does to her, and the accused.

"The moment Tiana Griffin began thinking differently about her lacrosse experiences arrived in July 2018 in a University of Maryland dorm room."

In a game in 2018 at the University of Maryland, Griffin yelled “Got ball” to signal to teammates she would take control of the ball. The referee blew his whistle and revealed a red card, ruling an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Griffin."

Can we assume this game was during the UMD camp? Do they have other games on campus, like tournaments? Maybe? We've only played at UMD tournaments on off site places like Troy Park and Cedar Lane.

Reason is significant is because if it was during camp, wouldn't camp counselors be refs? ie either UMD players or other current local college players...

I can't even tell what side you are on or what you are trying to say, Please, enough.

Not on a side, just saying how uttering damning those allegations, so callously thrown around, means.

Looks like they are probably trying to make some type of white supremacist serving argument to minimize the racism that was alleged to have happened.
