Yes it is, considering most of DCUM was claiming that no one would upload and everyone would just provide a note saying their kid was negative. Stop being such a negative Nancy and celebrate that people are actually trying to do the right thing.

Anonymous wrote:Yes, easy pickup, easy test, easy upload. I think it's mostly Covid theater but if it calms people's nerves, so be it.

Why is it theater to test kids before they return? Frankly, we should test every morning before we send kids to school, like they do in the UK.

I think some people think it is theater because they want zero risk, and this protocol (or any protocol, or anything) will provide it.

Ok. I am decidedly not in that camp. Zero risk is sitting in your house and having no contact with the outside world. Daily testing plus masking and outdoor eating all seem like reasonable measures to take.

But it isn’t theater, post above says family discovered their child was positive and keeping him/her home. They can also monitor themselves and test. Reducing spread is good and will help end this faster!

I agree that reducing spread may be good for continued school operation, but how will it end this faster? Assuming Omicron will eventually have to infect almost every child for spread to stop, reducing spread will draw out the process.

In simple terms: If contagious people isolate and stop spreading it, the virus will not live on.

Oh, so you are one of those who still believe that this virus can be eliminated. You need to come to terms with reality.

I’m immunocompromised so I need to cling to hope instead of excepting I will die. I know you DGAF about me but whatever heartless b****

Just because I am pointing out a reality that even Dr. Fauci has repeatedly acknowledged doesn't mean that I don't care about other people. I have immunocompromised family members myself, but I don't take comfort in wishful thinking. They have always had to take precautions, even before Covid. Please take your uncontrolled rage off the anonymous internet and find other outlets than throwing blind insults at people about whose predicaments you know nothing.

Please rethink your insensitivity and selfishness.

Please rethink your projection of insensitivity and selfishness on people about whom you know nothing except that they don't believe that Covid will be eliminated and that they have immunocompromised family members. Please explain how you think that makes someone selfish.

Selfish in that you only want this to be your echo chamber.

Um, no, I don't. You are free to post whatever you want. But you are right that I am only interested in engaging in fact-based, rational discussion. Be well.

Anonymous wrote:The virus is not going to be eliminated, true. But that doesn't mean we should abandon all efforts to keep it from spreading easily, such as telling people who are actively contagious not to come to school. We should also, in the Before Times, have been telling people who actively had the flu not to come to school, it's just that we didn't have at-home rapid flu tests.

Testing and finding out who has it is a big step AWAY from the kind of restrictions that everyone is — correctly, now that we have many effective vaccines and, at least at the moment, an apparently less dangerous strain of the virus circulating — objecting to. If a large number of the people who actively have covid don't come to school, there's much less of an argument to close the school. Same thing goes for any other public setting.

I am the PP whom the immunocompromised poster above was attacking, and I completely agree. I also agree that we should have been more pro-active about keeping sick people out of school pre-Covid. So I am not opposed to rapid testing, especially symptomatic people. I only objected to the idea that the testing in schools would somehow end the pandemic sooner, as I believe the virus will ultimately make its way though nearly the entire population. People at high risk despite vaccination, like some of my family members, will have to take additional precautions in the long term beyond what society as a whole does.

just pick up one at library.

The closest library near me that has rapids is about 3 miles away, I still have streets not plowed, and they are usually out of tests in 1-2 hours after they open. But go ahead and display more “just” privilege.

Oh and I am at work during the 12-2 time slots the library has them. Was already going to be late for work picking it up at 8:30. I will try another DCPS site that’s not too far from my commute to work in VA.

Confused why you waited until the last minute to get the rapids? They have been available almost every day for a couple of weeks now at several locations. Honestly not going to fault the mayor on this particular part of her running of the city.

It has been stated many times that most reading sites are out of tests by 2pm, during business hours. So by time PP gets off work at 5, tests are gone. Why do you people or have compassion for the working class? Sure yesterday there were supposedly a few tests remaining at SE library but that’s after a week of tests being done by 2pm. You assume people have the time and resources to be connected to Twitter and know the one day that tests remained after 7 days of selling out? Like PP said, what happened to the equity DCUM always supposedly loves?

Dude - I am all for equity, and I think that the city has done a fabulous job making free rapid tests available to all. You know that kids who don't have tests will be tested at school when they arrive, right? Keep looking for reasons to be outraged, but honestly, COVID is one area where Bowser has really performed in a stellar fashion.

Agree. Happy the process is catching cases.

100%. Additionally, they just reiterated that they plan to test any remaining students in the AM.

+1. Work for the DC government, which has been back in person since July. Caught omicron at a work meeting and had to cancel Christmas plans for my kids. Thanks Bowser.

I hope this is sarcasm.

I think its about 36,000 out of 51,000 students now. Honestly think thats pretty good. Our personal Title 1 school was only 35%, but they can show results and or test at school tomorrow morning.

Over 1,900 positive cases reported. More than a few. Also, I think this sufficiently negates the whole DC is using testing as an excuse to close schools argument since they are overwhelmingly staying in-person…

I agree - DCPS for the win! Great work!

The stats are up, including a school by school and staff versus student breakdown. At our school, cooperation was high, the staff positivity rate was more than twice the kid rate but under 10%. Based on this snapshot there is absolutely no reason at all for us to go virtual.

Ageee that everyone will eventually get Omicron. But if keeping actively positive cases out of school through testing can slow the spread so the hospitals can keep up, then that’s a good thing. Testing every Sunday night sounds like a great idea to me!

What’s up with the schools at the end of the alphabet?? All but one are reporting extremely low numbers for staff submissions… Wilson for example has 8 reporting. Tubman 6. And so on…

49k students in DCPS, as of now 38k have uploaded 78% participation rates with 5.5 positive rate.
