There are many ways in which Tufts may have advantages, and this was an example, yet you in your typical UVA supporter fashion are quick to blithely dismiss it. |
Not UVA. harvard. But the reason should be clear. Tufts is a private university and can do whatever it wants and creates whatever majors it wants. UVA is a state flagship. It's role is different - it is supposed t provide the Commonwealth with workers trained in a number of fields such as nursing, education, library science and many others. Those are traditionally low paying careers. There are many such majors at UVA. |
They forgot the UVA rules. If a ranking or measure has UVA behind another school, it is an invalid measure. If UVA is in front of the other school, it is a definitive measure. |
UVA doesn't have library science. Only 3.4% of undergraduates are in nursing, and starting salaries for nursing are actually on the higher end for UVA undergraduates. This report takes into account expected salary by major when calculating the value add for given schools. In other words, do graduates earn more or less than would be expected based on the majors they choose and by how much? UVA's "Value Add" is NEGATIVE $2,400. Tufts is PLUS $5,700. https://cew.georgetown.edu/cew-reports/college-rankings/#interactive |
Ouch , can someone explain further. Is it true? |

Re the Curry School of Education at UVA - multiple degrees can be had at undergrad, grad, and Ph.D level. Here are just a few. https://education.virginia.edu/academic-programs?type=degrees. It's a good double major as well |
Google is your friend: I Is UVA considered prestigious? The University of Virginia [40] is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. One of the most prestigious public universities in the country, "UVA" was founded by Thomas Jefferson, author of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and two-term U.S. President. It’s funny to me that someone has an axe to grind with my non prestigious alma mater (it’s several hours away from dc!) |
It is not an undergraduate major option. No undergraduates receive degrees in library science. https://www.virginia.edu/academics/majors https://ira.virginia.edu/cds-2020-21 |
I’m not a hater. My feeling is that any school outside my neighborhood that I’ve heard about at all can do great things for the right students. But, when I was applying to college, back in the 1980s, and wanting to major in physics, I assumed that Duke, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and Northwestern were all weaker than places like Tufts, Emory, Wash. U. or Case Western *because* they had Division I sports. It wasn’t till I started reading DCUM, as a parent, that I learned that people thought of Duke, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt as prestigious. It could be that, outside of the Southeast, Duke takes a hit, with respect to perceptions of academic prestige, because it looks like a basketball team with a university attached. |
You have got to be kidding. Duke, Northwestern and Vandy have always been stronger schools than WashU, Tufts and Case Western. Even back in the ‘80s. |
Vandy is no better than WashU or Emory. Tufts and Case I agree are a step below. |
I had never heard of Vandy and Northwestern during the 1980s, but I had heard of Tufts. |
