I think schools like Emory, Vandy, washU etc are hated because they challenge conventional ideas of prestige. I'm a GS and I had a student swear up and down that Wellesley was more prestigious than Emory despite that Emory is ranked higher and more selective. When I asked them why, they said because Wellesley is in New England lol. Schools like Emory and WashU do very well considering they aren't that famous, you would think peer schools that are much more famous like Berkeley or Georgetown would be more selective but... They aren't. |
UVa and well deserved |
^^^found the anti-Texas troll |
UVA, Georgetown, Duke, NYU, Tulane |
I would say UVA.
We lived in Chapel Hill for a long time, and would agree that Duke U. deserves shade as an over-priced school for spoiled children who wear face paint to mock opposing teams at basketball games. The campus is meh. UNC-CH has the much nicer campus. Go, Heels! |
no I'm just saying that the people writing paragraph long rants about texas need to take a chill pill |
The schools that the posters kids don't get into so they bash them on an anonymous board. |
Paying more for a private school does not make you more elite, haha. Would take Berkeley “state school” non-striver over a gross Uchicago “wanna-be Ivy” any day. |
For someone who has a lot of disdain for Duke, seems like it is either in the neutral category or the "no way are these schools elite!" category and includes Columbia, Hopkins, Northwestern. |
NYU |
Interesting. What are some strivery examples? |
LOL, good one. |
How so? Think not a lot about UT Austin as nearly impossible to get into OOS. Folks seem to like Rice but also very hard to get into. Abhorrence of Texas politics is very real and not irrational. |
Yeah, because heaven forbid any school that wasn’t prized a century ago improve itself and become prestigious. Same for people, if you weren’t born into wealth and privilege, don’t bother trying to earn your way up. ‘Striver’ is a word the insecure elite use to close ranks and protect their privilege. But guess, what—institutions change. And people, too. |
Guilty. I grew up just outside of High Point. It was bleak even before the furniture factories moved offshore and textile mills went under. I’m sure the school is fine and gives you a good education. Nut the surrounding area is economically depressed and has more than few MAGA types. We worked hard to raise our kids not in the HP area. |
