Charles Allen is displaying the highest form of privilege (to borrow his language) when he sides with the criminals. He can afford to do this because he has the means to insulate himself from crime. Because he has the means to easily absorb the financial and physical costs of crime. Because he is not a woman who fears being the victim of sexual assault.

We need leaders who are able to understand that most of us are not as privileged as they are, that most of us are not able to afford the emotional, physical, and financial fallout from coddling criminals.

Bullets flying in a usually quiet residential neighbors, seemingly at random. Apparently there were more shots later in the night. This is so wildly unacceptable. At least in San Fran it's more burglaries and car break ins, here it's bullets and things that can kill you. Not a peep from Charles Allen.

Someone please run against Allen in the primary. I would do it myself if my house wasn't just moved into ward 7.There has to be someone that is pushing Allen on this and holding him accountable. He only seems to respond when he gets a challenger.

Anyone running against Allen should just co-opt the speech given by SF Mayor London Breed -- who's perhaps more liberal than Allen -- on Tuesday in announcing a crackdown on crime:

“We are not a city where anything goes,” she said. “Our compassion should not be mistaken for weakness or indifference."

Right now, Charles Allen's compassion has indeed become weakness and indifference: He clearly does not care about the rising crime rate because he's a privileged white man and it doesn't affect him. He needs to go.

I don't think it's immaterial that London Breed is black. Allen's last challenger tried to characterize him as a white guy from Alabama - he took a hard left turn since then in reaction. He's terrified of being branded a racist. He would have a much harder time sticking to his woke bona fides against a black candidate.

I suspect some powerful people ($$$) pressured the San Fran mayor and made a strong case she needed to speak up on the crazy crime going on in that city. No doubt, there are companies threatening to pull out, and her hand is being forced. Not sure Allen will face the same kind of pressure, because he seems to be proceeding along just fine as his ward crumbles under gunfire and other serious quality of life problems.

My sympathy to those of you still living in Ward 6 who actually want change. I left in March after 18 years.

I think this will change quickly as more federal agencies adopt remote work or move out to the burbs in MD/VA. My agency recently moved us out to PG county so we no longer do any business at all in DC. Good luck attracting the private sector with uncontrolled property crimes and random gun battles.

Yeah the problem is the District hasn't felt the inevitable squeeze in tax revenue this increase crime will cause, because the last COVID bailout bill basically gave them a massive cash cushion.
