As a public school parent in GDS's neighborhood, there's no way I'll believe that the public school kids in my neighborhood are in any meaningful way less privileged than the private school ones. (Also, GDS opened their event up to the public.) |
+1 The clinics are at schools, but they are not meant for just the students at that school. Any kid in DC can go to any of the school clinics. Janney parents are perfectly capable of taking their kids to clinics at other schools. |
A large number of Janney kids already got their first shots anyway. |
| Yeah, Given all the parents I know, there will be no one at our school's vax event! |
Same here. A substantial percentage of kids in my daughter's grade are already vaccinated and the clinic at the school is tomorrow. They mostly went to clinics at other schools; a few got vaccinated at pharmacies. BTW, I think the school clinics are a great idea. The kids being able to play on the playground while waiting is fantastic. And I heard that some of the very first clinics were a bit of a mess, but our experience was pretty good. They gave you a number when you got in line, so you knew as soon as you arrived whether they had a shot for you or not. The HSA had free food available. My kid played right up until it was time to get the shot. |
There are plenty of parents for whom immediate vaccination isn't a high priority (as some in this thread noted) -- maybe they don't think it's worth taking the time to hunt down an appointment or to wait in line, when if they wait a week or two, they probably won't have to do that. Maybe no one in their household or immediate circle is particularly high risk, or maybe they've all already had covid and feel reasonably protected because of that. It's not like two weeks after the shots are authorized is such a long time in the grand scheme of a pandemic that's been going on for something like 20 months now. |

We’ve been at the Payne clinic for 30 minutes and haven’t moved an inch. We appear to be 100th in line or so. At this rate we’ll be here four hours and we’ll be lucky to get a shot.
DC Health has failed Ward 6. We need more clinics. |
I’m really sorry to hear that |
Ugh!! sorry. |
In the end we got our shot after 2.5 hours of waiting. They were actually very organized—it’s just that the line was slow moving and it became freezing outside, especially with young kids. We arrived early so we could get a shot. In hindsight I wish I’d gone right before closing time, when we could likely just walk up. Lesson-learned for next time! |
| How/where do kids vaccinated at the school sites get their second dose in three weeks? Will DCPS organize round 2 pop-ups? I got my kids vaccinated in Richmond today while on a family trip. Now trying to figure out second dose… |
Yes. We were told they will give the second shot in three weeks at the same school clinic. |
Hmm that makes sense with the cold - I was super surprised Payne had so many shots left over at the end. Didn’t you see us posting on this thread to watch the DC health’s Twitter and monitor how the line is? Smothers Elementary had like 39 kids get shots the whole day… |
| Janney parent here wondering how this will work: Should I send my husband to get in line early while I pick up kids from their various points on campus? The email seemed to read like you won't be given a number until you AND your children are in line together. Any insight? |
If it were me, I'd wait until 6:30 or 7 and see if there are shots left and try to do a no-wait situation. And if it's too crowded, find somewhere else in the next few days. But if your only path to vaccination is the clinic at Janney... yes, I guess get in line early? |
