Why are people not freaking out about Schedule F here?

Lots of federal employees on this board. DH and I are both lifelong feds who have worked our way up to very government-specific jobs that would be hard to replicate outside of our agencies, and we have two kids about to go to college. I've read the coverage and am absolutely terrified of a change that would allow us to be replaced at will by political appointees. Am I missing something here?

Most feds on this board are in exempt positions anyway so Schdule F doesn’t change anything. It only means something if you are in a non-exempt position.

Can the exempt positions already be fired at will?

I thought that schedule F would cover attorneys. I’d assume that the big reason for it is to go after the “deep state” and that would include DOJ prosecutors and supervisors.

I'm no expert, but as a Fed, I feel like there would be lawsuits aplenty before the pen was dry on the HR actions and the whole thing would get suspended by a judge until they got sorted out or the whole thing is scrapped.

I was worried when it was announced also. It was done in an executive order however so I don’t think it can necessarily jeopardize our jobs all that much. However I am concerned about retribution by a vindictive President and his minions. I am extremely careful about every single thing I put in writing on my work computer. I don’t do anything personal on my work device.I also do my job and I do it well. Part of schedule F is designed to make it easier to get rid of do-nothing employees. There are some people like that although much less than the public thinks there are. Generally I find civil servants to be dedicated and hard working with the occasional problem employee.

The problem of schedule F that I see if that it deters people from pursuing leadership/supervisory positions that elevate them outside of the collective bargaining unit. My agency has a lot of good people but it also has several vacant supervisor positions. No one wants the extra workload for a relatively little pay increase added with the loss in job security.

I think the people that are going to be targeted will be at the SES level. I think most of the people on the jobs board are at the staff level so I don't think it's something they generally need to be worried about.

Suppose Trump wins. Reclassifying employees likely will need to go through the APA rulemaking process to undo protections being imposed by Biden. That will take several months. Then it will be tied up in litigation for a couple years. By that point--mid 2027 or so--Trump will have a hard time filling any vacancies that he is able to create.

IMO Trump's primary win is probably a good thing. DeSantis or Haley would probably be far more effective at carrying out Schedule F reclassification than Trump, who is generally incompetent and surrounds himself with morons like Jenna Ellis.

I’m fuzzy on all the details here but isn’t it up to the agency heads to determine who would qualify? When this was threatened during his last term, some agencies did put together a list of who would be included in schedule F. I learned recently that it would have affected around 75% of staff at our agency. I was really surprised because I also did t think the worker bee staff would be affected. I’m at a regulatory agency, FWIW.

I think many Feds are extremely naive.

Yes, if you have a union and you’re doing a fairly boring job, you’ll probably be fine. You could probably be covered under a lawsuit or protected by your higher ups.

But that’s unlikely. If you have a job that is at all public-facing or politically interesting or touches on policy, you are screwed. It is very easy for them to make your life miserable, hire a political into your job without actually firing you… you’ll just find yourself completely sidelined with nothing to do and everyone whispering behind your back that you’re incompetent or a traitor. Then you’ll find a new job because they’ve basically forced you out… and they win without facing a lawsuit or really any reprocussions at all.

This is exactly what happened to me during the last Trump admin.

It is actually the GS-15 supervisors who need to worry.

No political appointee wants to do my job, so I'm sure I'm safe.

Do you really think that Trump and Heritage are organized enough to replace GS15s throughout the federal government?

No it won't what do you not understand about the definition of a dictatorship?
We will follow no norms.
They will fire at will.

You think Trump and Co are not coming in and decimating the entire federal government to meet Trump's whims?
And salaries LOL

Let's try again you are not paying attention.

Project 2025 has only been 1/3 released, another 2/3 has been leaked and it's not good for feds.
