Can the people won are deciding on $50,000+ private or public school go elsewhere?

After you’ve applied and been admitted to a top private school isn’t the time to finally decide whether your public school is a suitable option. You can figure all of that out before applying. Really you can! All of the information is already there.

It’s annoying to people who have committed to private school, ONLY applied to private schools and properly assessed their options before applying. It’s not like the random public school you are considering just randomly popped up over night. You have the data you need. You’re taking up seats for kids who definitely know they want private school while you twiddle your thumbs asking dumb questions and asking people to make comparisons for you.

In my jurisdiction, we have to apply to specialty programs in the public school. We are weighing the public specialty option {which was not a guarantee) with the private options.

It’s annoying when people post about something they don’t know anything about.

I think this is unfair to families who are looking at pluses and minuses of both options and that's why they applied to private. A lot depends on your kid and, especially for MS and HS, whether you think the social dynamics at the private where you are accepted will work for your child.

Agree with OP. Or that an anonymous board is going to give you reliable information. Do the work, ask people that you know actually have kids in the school.

This comes off as being bitter about being on the WL or taking up seats, maybe you should have done something to make your child more competitive?

I agree because many or most private school parents have never sent their kids to private and have intention on doing so. I feel like it is a constant barrage of posts about schools I have never heard of and would not consider. If we started posting constantly on public forums they would all get deleted.

Private school application deadlines and even some acceptance/deposit deadlines fall before acceptances for some public magnet and other specialized programs are known.

Parents can only know so much before those acceptances come out, even if you ask every other parent at every school.

You’ll just have to sweat out the waitlist.

You might prefer that your kid go to Walls vs. private school, but there's no guarantee they will get into Walls. So you apply to Walls and private schools because between private and e.g.Eastern HS, you'll definitely choose private.

Or you might anticipate getting more financial aid than you get or hoping your kid will win one of the rare merit scholarships. Your child gets in but it's going to cost more than anticipated,so you don't know if you should choose private.

No no no. They're just humble bragging, OP. They want to flaunt their options. They may also have temporary cold feet, but it won't last long - after all, they've jumped through all the hoops and the lure of pRiVatE will be too much for them.

Funny how it's never couched in those terms, however. That would be garner a lot more sympathy. One thread creator talked about differences in workload between a public magnet and a number of privates, and we couldn't even help them, because the actual schools were not mentioned. That OP just wanted to show off.

I get it but honestly if you have the option for private and the funding works out I would go to private. We may have complaints but private is better overall hands down. If you have the option make it work.

I disagree. In our district there is no way of getting in to visit a public school until the open houses which are usually in April. And only if your kid is eligible for K that year, hence you cannot tour the public school the year prior. Most public schools don't do private tours, I have asked (and why would they).

I'm one of the parents you are apparently annoyed about. At the point that applications were due, I didn't know whether my kid would be offered a magnet slot.

I'm taking up seats that the schools designated for my child, because they wanted him. They aren't seats that were designated for kids who definitely know they want private school, they are seats designated for my particular child.
