It's wrong of me to enjoy the way parents with children born between August and December have been reacting to the birth-year switch, not on this board but in real life, especially over the past couple of days when all the lost maturity effect advantages have really sunk in. I'm a bad person. Pathetic. |
Yeah, you kinda are. Because it's not about the "lost maturity effect advantages." It's about wanting to give kids a good experience, and they're worried they won't get that if their kindergartners have to play their first soccer seasons with first-graders. And because none of this really matters competitively until U12 or so, when it actually makes sense to switch to birth years. So if you think this is about parents who thought their kids were going to dominate at U6 and are pouting because it's not so ... wow, you've missed the point by a mile. |
Correct me if I'm wrong -- isn't ODP already by birth year? When you reach the truly competitive ages, it makes sense to go by birth year. Before then? We STILL haven't seen the argument in favor. Just a bunch of yahoos telling us "it's no big deal" or "y'all are just a bunch of whiny parents of August-October birth dates." |
Our league has at about 10 boys born June and July per grade that play down because these kids were redshirted. Oct.-Dec. kids aren't given the option to go to school early whereas June, July, and August kids are redshirted all over the place. Because of sheer volume, it is likely these same Oct. Dec. kids won't be able to play down either in rec. Why should there have been so much flexibility with the current system for summer birthdays but so little flexibility with the new system? |
Oh please. I'm guessing this poster has older kids and is thinking about the reaction of the parents of older kids who have been playing for years. Note the "real life" statement. We were certainly taken aback by how freaked out some of the parents of December born kids were when our kid's team moved to a calendar year league. Those of us with June and July born kids had long since stopped worrying about the age effect. I was more sympathetic than gloating, but it's human to feel pleased that your kid might all of the sudden look a little bigger and stronger because of the changes, and it's a bit funny to think how many people never thought about the issue until it personally impacted them. |
Your kid still sucks. Mine already play up. |
Where's the "rec" button? This is awesome. My kid was playing U7 when he was 4, so I don't see what the problem is. Ha. |

You people are all crazy. No wonder travel soccer parents have a bad reputation. Didn't realize there were so many mini-Messis out there. So happy your 2 year old is playing with the U13s or whatever nonsense you're blathering about. Let's check back in at U16 and see how lil Messi is doing then...good grief. |
Please explain because I don't see how this is possible. Under the current rules, there's no possibility of someone born before the August 1 cutoff date being allowed to "play down". |
Agree. We have the August bdays playing down but that's it |
LoL. |
This will probably benefit my DD who is a March birthday, but she and her rec coach are upset because more than half the team is going to have to be replaced with different players. These are girls that he has trained for 5 years now and are part of the once-cohesive team. Now he'll be with a whole different group of girls. Plus the other girls will have to move to a different coach on a new team, and will probably be split up between different coaches. |
Hi PP. Have you and the other parents of the Jan-August kids on the team talked about the possibility of playing up a year in order to stay with the older girls on the team? This is what we plan to do for my daughter's rec team to keep the team together. |
I was talking about rec soccer. These kids can play down in rec but then can't play in an all star tournament at the end of the season. |
