The best people tend to be mission driven and resilient. Unlikely they will leave so quickly. The best people tend to be focused on the big picture and the long game. They can endure a rocky 4 years. Everyone is replaceable even if we like to think we aren’t. Many young college graduates are chomping at the bit to replace older folk. A wave of retirements might be a boost to the under thirty crowd |
As long as the government hiring process is, you forget that people probably worked in the private sector beforehand. Many will be fine. |
I know that I'm going to stay as long as I can, but I fear I'm going to have to start actively telling younger folks in my field not to take a job with us unless they have no other options. Professionals in niche jobs with small job markets can't live in fear of being let go on probation for no good reason. The cost of long-term unemployment for someone who just finished years of low/no pay in graduate school is devastating. And, in fields with lots of government-only work, the process of becoming a SME in the government is actively harmful to your career prospects on the outside over time. Without strong job protections, there's no good reason to take the job, even if the pay was as good as private sector (which it isn't, of course). |
It's always been incredibly difficult to recruit recent grads. Tech companies pay much better than the government does. Even universities pay better. |
No, because the pay for private industry professionals is usually about 25% higher than feds at this point, so you don't have to live on a lower salary in the DC metro. You also know what you are getting into: feds agreed to lower salaries for job security. Many fellow feds have been "retiring" from their federal positions at 20 years to take private industry jobs so they can pay their kids college tuition, at least at my agency. |
I’m trying to remind myself that I have always been this type of Fed. But the mission of helping “the American people” is quickly losing its luster. I’ll have to envision an idealized version of the people we serve to keep my focus. |
It's hard to want to continue to serve your country and the American people when they are so openly hostile to you. |
Sometime mission driven are hard working and innovative, when they are treated with respect and have flexibility. Those too far from retirement will stay mission driven, do the minimum, fly under the radar. |
The tech companies are RTO and many are doing RTO to reduce numbers/forced quitting and hiring freezes. There are not as many jobs as people think. |
This seems like a problem that our President should address…. |
I didn’t get laid off but severance was 2 weeks for every 5 years you’ve been at the company. Feds are just whiny losers who seriously don’t understand how good they have it, yes even including working in an office, gasp! |
| What are we going to do with all of these people who are forced out? Unemployment is not good for the economy. |
We can stop approving H one B's for starters. |
I’m not sure why you feel this way. The vast majority of people across the US do not care. Honestly, they are not thinking of you. |
Sorry you can’t compete. |
