California schools

Are there any CA schools that could work for a test optional, good grades kid with some merit or fairly reasonable cost (under 50k)? We are out of state and I think CA public universities don't give merit to out of state students. It can't be a very selective or top school. Any ideas? Dd really wants to go to CA but not sure anywhere would work.

Many CA schools are test blind, so the test optional isn’t an issue.

The $50k total cost for OOS is the harder nut.

For that price, you could attend on of the better community colleges, e.g. Pasadena City, Glendale, Santa Monica, etc. OOS tuition is around 10k, plus living expenses.

Note: if you were a California resident, tuition is like 1k.

Would it not be weird to do community college from out of state? Is it not mostly local kids?

Not sure how affordable public schools would be for OOS. Pretty sure Chapman, Occidental, Redlands, Loyola Marymount, and University of San Francisco all give pretty good merit aid. Whittier definitely gives very good merit, and I don’t think one has to be very high stats to get it.

Good suggestions above. Chapman is a good private university - would check them out.

Santa Clara University, University of San Diego (private, not UC), and Occidental
The Claremont Colleges are amazing but offer limited merit aid

Since when do you have to be a resident of California to attend a California community college? Genuinely curious.

Last I looked, most of the CSUs are 50k or less for OOS and are test blind. Cal Poly would be the most prestigious and admission chances vary widely by major.

Privates like SCU, USD, LMU would be harder to get down to your budget price of 50k with merit. They are all test optional.

Huh? All UC, all Cal State, Caltech, USD, and others. That’s many.

OMG super expensive. my niece went there. Not the best academics. Over $90K a year now. not worth it. https://www.chapman.edu/students/tuition-and-aid/financial-aid/undergraduate/cost-of-attendance.aspx

Not test blind. Go and do your research before posting. I am a californian. And forget the community colleges, there is a residency requirement. And most of the Cal States also make it onerous for a californian to attend BECAUSE THEY ARE FOR CALIFORNIANS. As are the UC schools (now less than 10% OOS because the residents revolted against the UC regents)

Oops sorry, USD is test blind aka "test free." SCU and LMU have not yet announced if they are test optional for next fall's admission process.
