People are always comparing Chapman and Elon. Why? How are they similar? Btw, Chapman does not have a good reputation on the west coast. |
No. You’d encourage them to go to school in their home state, or attend another school you can afford. You would not send an 18 year old across the country to attend a community college. Ridiculous suggestion and nothing OP wrote even indicates her kid is interested in that! |
+1 I told my DD this. We are originally from CA, and she wants to go back. But, it's oos CA college is too expensive, so we told DD to go locally, and with the money we save, we could help start her out in CA. Rent/home prices, gas prices, sales tax in CA is insane. You have to factor that in. |
NP here. I knew an 18 yr old who travelled from Kentucky to Santa Monica where she attended the community college (and stayed with an aunt) to do exactly this. It happens. It's not exactly a "Bethesda" thing, which is perhaps why you're so shocked that it would be suggested. |
Thank you! Yes, after looking into it I think we will definitely apply to SDSU, maybe one more Cal State and look into merit for privates a bit more. Maybe there is a much less selective school that would award her enough. |
I don’t know anything about Elon but I live in Southern California and Chapman has a good reputation. I think the success of its film school has raised its profile across the board. |
It's 2024 - LMU and USD are about 75 - 100 slots below SDSU in the ratings least favorable to SDSU right now. |

My DH went to San Jose State University and got a great education and really enjoyed it - especially for CS it's a good option because they are so plugged into silicon valley.
Not sure what the "california" that keeps yelling is prattling on about - your kid won't get into UCLA or something, but SJSU and the like is absolutely doable, even for an out of state student. |
Not how any of that works. If you arrive in CA to attend CC and pay out-of-state tuition there, you won't get that reversed on transfer. Moving for the purpose of attending school is exactly what the forms are out to identify. Bank accounts, leases and drivers licenses wont help if you've already identified in the system as an out-of-state student.

| Don't know if this helps...my high stats DC was accepted to Santa Clara University EA ($2k merit aid/yr) and Occidental RD ($20K merit aid/yr) but they submitted test scores. |
I'm this PP - but even with this large merit package for Occidental that still doesn't get you below $50K when you include housing. |
It IS 2024, and the US News rankings for these colleges are: #93 - LMU #98 - USD #105 - SDSU So I have no idea what PP is referring to in saying LMU and USD are 100 spots lower than SDSU...? |
| Others have provided the good suggestion of applying to a Cal state/ Cal Poly school. For example, San Diego state OoS tuition is 20,170 this year, San Jose State is 19,779, and Cal Poly -San Luis Obispo is 26,970. For comparison, UVa in state tuition is 20,342. |
I would not pay oos for CSU schools. -CSU grad |
