I know there's a thread on this in Entertainment. But this thread is just for fashion and beauty commentary. Pictures highly encouraged.
I think the fashion is really terrible at this show. I'll post some favorites eventually but mostly I'm going to post what look like fails for me. The two themes I see so far are: - Uninspired neutrals. So much beige. Also, just an FYI, shiny beige is just shiny beige. - Horrible fits. Like so bad I checked to see if there was some kind of seamstress strike going on. And on very high profile stars. Totally insane to see fitting errors on people like Margot Robbie and Quinta Brunson at such a high profile event. |
|
Starting with Quinta Brunson, who usually does well at these kind of events. This is tragic. The color... can you call this a "color"? If it were a paint chip, they'd just call it "Nothing" or "Blank. The length is upsetting. Why? Just take it to the floor, it's a formal event. But then on top of that horrifying hem length, the fit seems off? Not as bad as a few other examples, but the puckering around her midsection can't just be about the fabric and her posture (she always stands like that, and she's not that slouched). I feel like maybe in getting the bodice to fit perfectly (which it does), it throws off the rest of the dress and maybe indicates that this was just the wrong pull for her generally. The neckline is nice on her but the rest is just not.

Julia Garner. A lot of people went with silver and gold (part of the neutrals trend) though this is one of the better versions, IMO. I think the boob straps are weird, but she likes weird in her clothes. But I like that the silver sets off her skin and hair instead of just matching it (Elle Fanning, please take note). I like her makeup, hair, and jewelry except I think a bolder lip color would have been nice. Not a classic red, which feels a little done, but a bit more color than this.

Da'Vine Joy Ralph. One of my favorites for the night. Great color, great shape, hair and makeup perfect, you can tell she really loves it. Also if you haven't seen the Holdovers, she and Paul Giamatti are both really fantastic in and I recommend.

Hard disagree. She looks amazing. |
The bust is jacked and contributes to the no-neck look. This could be so much better. |
|
Bella Ramsey. I have to think on this. I appreciate that she stays true to herself no matter what and I like the color of the jacket. But it feels so casual and business-y. I think it's the color of the pants. Beige strikes again! I'm imagining this with a really rich navy for the pants and I think it's better.

Elle Fanning. Almost no point in complaining, she's worn some version of this look a million times. I don't get it. Why not go for a true gold? Pink? Soft blue? She looks amazing in pastels but insists on wearing champagne that matches her hair almost exactly. But beyond that, the bust looks droopy and the fit at the waist seems off. It looks heavy, like it might fall offer and this is exacerbated by the length. It's slightly shorter in front to show off her shoes, but it gives the effect that the whole thing was supposed to be hemmed to that length but it's falling down. Another fit fail.

Emma Stone and Elizabeth Debicki, more members of the beige brigade. They look good (amazing actually) but I'm just bored. It least these dresses fit really well though.
I like Debicki's necklaces and Stones hairstyle. Stones shoes are boring AF. |
| Debicki and Ramsay look great! Style wise better than Stone, who does look super gorgeous. Thank you for these pictures! |

This is my favorite dress of the night so far (but not favorite overall look). It's gorgeous, just the work that goes into executing something like this. I want to touch it so badly.
I am tired of this hairstyle on her and I really, really wish she'd pulled some of the color from the skirt into her jewelry or makeup. Like I'm imagining some pink or green near her face. I feel like it's a really wasted opportunity to create a really beautiful look. I never say this about Portman but it kind of feels like the dress is wearing her here. She looks checked out (and maybe is, it's been a weird year for her, so kudos to her for doing her job with regards to her new movie which looks good though I have not seen it).

Margot Robbie. Ok I saw an early photo/interview with her that made it look like the bustline near her armpits wasn't laying flat. But I've looked closely and I think it was a momentary shift in posture or a trick of the light because the bust is perfectly fitted. Obviously this is a specific thing and I still love it. Good for her for going with it this year.
It will be a relief to see her wearing literally any other color once the Oscars are over. I bet she's looking forward to it too. |
I love the dress but the wrap thing is....I don't know. There's something about the color that is off? Maybe that was on purpose. |
No one is making her wear pink, unless it was literally in her film contract. We all know she played Barbie, she doesn’t have to remind us all the time. |
This is a great dress, but it looks like it's swallowing her. She is so tiny. Maybe it should have been shorter? |
