Question about Messianic Judaism

Anonymous
A woman in my daughter's Girl Scout leadership has mentioned that she's a Messianic Jew but that her family hasn't been able to find a local congregation because anyone who starts one up gets sued by Jewish groups. Just wondering if this is true. What would the basis for the lawsuit be?

It’s not true that they get sued. It’s completely crazy to think they would be. There are several Messianic Jewish congregations in the dc area.

In a nutshell they believe that Jesus is the Messiah but continue to practice Jewish customs like Shabbat and the high holidays.

I thought it sounded suspicious. She made it sound like it's a constant ongoing thing where they're being persecuted and not allowed to set up a church.

Cannot imagine any grounds on which Jewish groups could sue Messianic Jews, though I’m sure many of us wish we could. Personally I find them quite annoying, but for better or for worse, you can’t sue someone just for that.

It’s not true. They feel extra persecuted because they’re Christians who claim they’re Jewish and they don’t understand why Jews find that obnoxious and offensive.

They are a truly bizarre group of folks. There is a temple/church near me (a couple hours outside of Dc). The local Jewish groups haven’t sued them but I know they are not welcomed or invited to Jewish community events that bring multiple synagogues together.

Jews hate them because they Christians who are more observant Jews than non-Christian Jews are.

Canadian lawsuit claiming that menorah is "trademarked" by non-Messianic Jews

I also want to say it’s strange how they celebrate holidays too. They really focus on the Old Testament ones and downplay Christmas and Easter. They don’t celebrate Halloween or decorate for Christmas much.

Frankly I think their name should be messianic Christians because they do believe in Christ. The offensive part is how they say they’re Jews.

This is such a load of BS. Just the phrase “non Christian Jews” is anti-semetic btw.

Jewish here, Messianic Christians are often found telling Jews how they can do being Jewish better, if only they believed in Jesus. I can't imagine why that doesn't go over well. /S

I thought you are Jewish through your bloodline regardless of belief.

I know one couple that is Messianic Jewish and tbf the husband is ethnically Jewish and was raised Jewish so he's not an evangelical LARPer or anything.

This is incorrect, it's because they insist that the right way to be Jewish is to believe Jesus was the messiah. Whatever their other customs are, they aren't being observant Jews.
