They have no case. We’re specifically told not to write anything political in our signatures. He violated the code of conduct.

And they're alleging that that code of conduct was not enforced when other employees put political quotes in their signatures, which could give her a case.

This. Here's the complaint- https://www.cair.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/ElHagganEEOC.pdf MCPS had no problem with Black Lives Matter in signature blocks. It seems like a selective enforcement of rules based on a disfavored political opinion

The story says the teacher was reprimanded not suspended. That seems appropriate for violating the code of conduct.

There are actually federal OSC opinions on this. “BLM” is not partisan wrt Hatch Act. Not the same law at play here, but instructive.

Not sure if OSC has weighed in on “From the River to the Sea” but it seems obviously partisan and political. In fact it represents the kind of side-taking that presents the kind of potential disruption that is exactly what they want to avoid in the workplace.

Ok? It's a political statement targeting a foreign country. If BLM is ok, then banning this seems like viewpoint discrimination and selective enforcement

Why are you equating Israel with Jews? If you are equating a nation state with a religion, then do you support firing pro-Israeli teachers (which could be intimidating to Muslim students)?

It’s political but not partisan. Doesn’t go to the election or support of a US candidate for office. Hatch Act wouldn’t come into play here if this were a federal workplace - which it isn’t obviously.

Hatch Act violations are actually pretty narrow.

Agree that selective enforcement could be a problem for MCPS.

BLM takes no side in a partisan election much less an actual territorial war.

DP. I don’t think Israeli teachers should be putting Israeli flags in the classroom or putting Israeli political slogans in ther school email mail sigs.
