I've been doing Peloton strength classes at home, but would like to do a class once or twice a week in person somewhere. Don't really want to join a gym.
Any suggestions for a weekly exercise class that I could sign up for that I can just pay on a week by week basis? I tried the Montgomery County Rec classes, but they don't work with my schedule right now. A strength or kickboxing class would be great. Preferably in Montgomery County. |
You could do something like F45. Buy a pack of classes and use as you wish. |
Thanks! I just Googled it and saw there's a studio about 15 minutes away. Will look into it. |
Jazzercise |
OP again. I’m almost 50, so I think Jazzercise might actually be a better options than F45. The F45 looks a bit intense! Thanks. |
When you say you "don't want a gym membership" do you mean a membership to any kind of exercise studio also? example pilates or barre studio?
If the answer is yes then just buy packs of classes. Many of these studios will sell these, but keep in mind the cost will often be higher for a pack than if you just purchased a monthly membership. You can also look into Class Pass. |
I just don’t want to be committed to a monthly membership. I’m open to buying a package of lessons even if it does cost a bit more! |
Usually buying a package of lessons costs less -- you buy 10 and get a slight discount from just buying 1 at a time. I'd look at: Orange Theory Fitness Barre3 I think Barre3 in particular might be a great fit for you, but OTF is great too. Most of these studios will do a complimentary class for a first timer so you can check it out and see if you like the class. |
Not sure where you are located, but the Turkey Thicket rec center in DC has boot camp classes M,W,Sat. It's a mixture of young people (late 20's to early 70's). Great fun! |
I'm the PP who asked the original question "When you say you "don't want a gym membership" do you mean a membership to any kind of exercise studio also? example pilates or barre studio? " I'm a B3 addict, but back when I was only going 3 times a week instead of the current 5-6 days a week, I looked into buying a class-pack and it was still financially a better deal to buy the unlimited membership. That said the math for the class-pack made sense if you went 1-2 times per week so yes this would work for OP. I really do love B3 especially their new strength class! |
That would be a bit far for me, but thank you! I was actually trying to find a class like that in MoCo, but having trouble with my work schedule. I feel like a Rec Center class would be less intimidating than one of these other options. I’m in average shape, and I do like the at home Peloton because there’s nobody there to judge my jiggly old lady bod or give me a side eye because I can’t do something, lol! |
I'm mid-40s and I enjoy Fit4Mom's classes (the adult-only ones, not the baby/stroller ones). The franchise I go to in NoVa skews mid-30s to mid-40s for those classes, though there are some older women at them too. |
I used to do F45 in bethesda and it was a really welcoming atmosphere. Everyone was supportive - it didn’t matter who could do what. I do solidcore now and it’s amazing and (I think) lots of fun. You could try one of the beginner classes if you have any interest; I think it’s especially great for middle-aged women with all the core work and how joint-friendly it is. I’m 47 and there are plenty of us suburban moms there! |
You may find it’s still cheaper to join a gym that has classes included. It’s about $40/month for OneLife and even if you only went to two classes a week, they’d still be about $5/class. |
ClassPass is a token based membership that can be used at lots of different gyms, so I don't know if that counts for you. I like it because I can go to which ever gym has a class that fits my schedule, which changes a lot. Also I get bored doing the same thing all the time. Tokens roll over at the end of the month. |
