Neighbor has pit bull

Anonymous
We live in North Arlington in a quiet street. Neighbors two doors down got a pit bull. They walk the pit bull a lot and it has always made me uncomfortable with small children in the street. The pit bull has not been violent yet against anyone. But recently, the neighbors have begun keeping the pit bull in their front yard, on a leash that’s about 20 to 25 feet, long but not long enough to reach the sidewalk. The pit bull barks aggressively at children passing by and is scary to them. It is also scary to adults. Personally, I hate the damn dog. Is there anything that can be done? Get the county involved?

Yes. Children should not be in the street. If people are scared of the dog, don't walk past its yard.

Dog people are the most clueless people on earth. They think their killer dog is the sweetest thing on earth!

Are the neighbors outside with the dogs? I believe it is against the law for them to leave the dogs alone outside with no supervision.

If the owners are not in the yard with them, I suggest you call Animal Control and alert them.

Is it truly barking aggressively or is it barking in excitement? Do you know the difference?
There is so much ignorance surrounding dogs, pit bulls especially.

You’ve already decided this dog is scary and you hate it? Have you interacted with it? Or just basing your opinion on what breed you think it is?

Pitbulls are aggressive dogs. They should be banned.

We had a neighbor who left their dog in the yard to bark for hours and with enough calls to animal control they eventually got rid of it. This was years ago though, I don't know what their current policy is. I'm sorry your neighbors are being so thoughtless, this sounds distressing for both the community and the poor dog.

Is it a bark to alert, or an aggressive/reactive bark? Nuisance barking?

It sounds like you don’t like pitbulls, but you live in a state that doesn’t allow breed bans. Only dogs with a history of aggression can be banned.

So once the pit bull injures a child, then you'll be able to call animal control

We had a similar situation. We reported the nuisance barking and we also reported that the dog was scaring children near a county school bus stop (true.) I’m not sure what was said but the people at least stopped leaving the dog alone in the yard.

It doesn’t sound like the dog has actually done anything except bark. At this point the most you could do is possibly talk to them about the barking.

You can find a big country estate with no neighbors and live there.
