I cannot think of a major that would require calculus but not statistics, and also have students who failed a precalculus test. The only people who avoid stats but take calc are math/CS majors. Other sciences require stats, and non sciences don't require calculus. [/quote]

Yeah this is off the mark, say that about calculus if you want, but pre-calc is just a solid HS education.  My worry wouldn't be that this is used for college gatekeeping, but that it reflects an actual deficiency that will be hard to overcome later.  Needless to say no one uses math they didn't learn, but there are topics in pre-calc that can be very useful, including for understanding statistics.[/quote]
