When is the first year MV kids aren't "guaranteed" DCI access?

Anonymous
Can someone remind me when the bubble year is when MV kids outsize their number of allocated DCI slots? Was it this year or next? If this year, did any kid not get in? Are those who doesn't get in automatically "ahead" of other kids on the waitlist or is everyone then lumped together by their "master" numbers?

Thanks.

It's the current 4th grade class-- because next year is the first year Calle Ocho has a 5th grade.

However, MV has such attrition that they may not have enough 5th graders to exceed their allotment anyway. Even if they do, they might be able to let in all kids from both campuses who want to attend DCI. I know plenty of kids choose Latin, BASIS, ITS, or private, so your chances at DCI are still pretty decent.

I'm pretty fuzzy on how the waitlist works, sorry.

+1. With the amount of attrition MV is seeing, it’s unlikely there won’t be seats for everyone who wants DCI.

"Students who are attending any of the member charter schools at the time of transition to secondary school are given preference for enrollment at DCI in the language tracks in which they are enrolled. If there are any additional spaces once all eligible feeder school students have enrolled, these may be opened up to students outside of the member school preferences."

Seems like:

1. MV students admitted/WL based on allocated seats
2. MV allocated seats worked through WL
3. If all seats from other schools are not filled, MV WL would be first to be allocated seats (over and above formal allocated MV seats)
4. Only if all feeder school WL have been exhausted would non-feeders then be enrolled

Note, it says "in the language tracks in which they are enrolled". So that means the Chinese and French schools don't give spots to extra MV graduates.

Also: "DCI has sibling preference within DCI, as well as with the following member schools: DC Bilingual, LAMB, Mundo Verde, and Yu Ying. Sibling preference can only be approved for siblings in the same language track."

So that seems like if there's too many MV kids for the allocation, those who are DCI siblings would have preference for the empty seats.

Parents at the over subscribed feeder schools should lobby for wait-list priority beyond sixth grade. In other words, if you are at a feeder but shut out of DCI at sixth grade, you should be able to still get priority in seventh and maybe eighth as well.

Probably should still come after sibling priority, but there should be a second chance.

It seems like the elephant in the DCI admissions policymaking room is that some of the feeder schools' academic performance is so poor, the school might be better off with outside kids.

I mean, no. Not if you understand how the feeder schools helped create DCI and why. It's not billed as or supposed to be achievement based entry, like Walls etc.

For the MV kids in 4th now, I think they should be in good shape because DCB has a small 4th grade class.

How were MV PARCC scores this past year? Does anyone know? I am rooting for that school, but it often seems to get in its own way.

I know it's not achievement-based, but DCI is under pressure to deliver academic results in a way that elementary schools aren't. looking at some of the feeder schools' stats, I can see why taking their chances on lottery kids might seem appealing.

Choose "School Level". At P St, less than 30% of the kids were on grade level in math, and less than 40% in ELA.

There is no way to read the words on the page (I quoted them above) and come to your conclusion. It is black and white; outside kids (which includes sibs) are offered seats only after all feeder kids are offered seats in their language. That means that even if MV exceeds their allocated seats, if there are open Spanish seats they will be filled by MV (or other Spanish feeder kids) before any outside kids (including sibs) are enrolled. This isn't an opinion question.

Uh you're kinda rude. I meant that *within the MV or other Spanish feeder kids who didn't get in initially based on their lottery numbers*, sibling preference would determine the waitlist placement.

Sibling preference (enrolled/offered/etc.) determines the order in which kids are offered seats on the initial lottery allocation. That is shown on the WL data page. Scroll down and it shows offers by category. Again, none of this is subject to DCUM interpretive dance and opinion. All there in black and white on the page.

Not rude. Just sick and tired of drama mammas and daddies acting like this is all so hard.
