As announced in ArlNow
https://www.arlnow.com/2023/10/18/aps-middle-and-high-schools-to-beef-up-security-attendance-with-e-hall-pass-system/ Can someone explain how this works? Kids at my MS — which is at one of the schools listed in the article where this is happening next moth — are supposed to have phones out away in their lockers. |
Maybe it's installed on their school iPad? |
It’s weird this is being reported in ArlNow but not from APS… |
That's how parents get the APS news these days. If pattern follows, APS will send something out to parents in the next few weeks. |
Yes, students can download it onto their phone (a hard "no" from me, the parent) or onto their school issued device. That means they get to take their iPad or laptop into the bathroom stall with them. Can't let it out of your control or sight for an instance in case someone else picks it up or walks away with it - even by accident - or you'll be caught without a pass! |
They should make Syphax employees use this app and track them. Make sure they're where they're supposed to be and know where to find them when they aren't responding to emails or phone calls. |
Wait is this real? How are you supposed to go to the bathroom? |
They say it’s for security, but that could be accomplished by static student is cards that can be scanned for validity. No need for paying for some app.
Same with hall pass, teacher enters into central server, scan student ID, it shows they have a virtual hall pass, no student device required. |
So now APS is going to require kids to bring a recording device to the bathroom? What could go wrong?! |
This is the problem with incomplete information going out. An FAQ should be part of this announcement.

I’m a high school teacher. Lots of rumors here. I doubt the expectation is that kids will have to use their own phones. I highly doubt the expectation is that they take their laptops or iPads into the bathrooms.
Sorry, but I appreciate this effort on the part of APS. It may eliminate kids meeting up in the bathroom, or abusing bathroom privileges. That, I assure you, is rampant. Of course, there are many kids that don’t abuse the privilege, occasionally may need to take longer, or what have you. I doubt any of this will be a problem for them. It is an extra measure of school safety and security. I’m down. |
Also… think about how dirty those bathroom hall passes probably are! So gross. Welcome, Manga. |
Maybe the teachers will have a program and logs when they leave. Or there's something in a classroom. If a student is gone for too long, it automatically alerts admin or security (hopefully the time-keeping isn't up to the teacher, as if teacher don't have enough responsibilities).

That’s what I’m talking about! This could be great. |
Par for the course |
