Hoax: Hate crime attackers: "This is MAGA country."

I've been reading this thread but this is my first time chiming in. I'm in no way defending Smollett, but I do think that his actions should be contextualized. There have been a number well publicized events designed to stir up racial tension. I think the best example of this was the catholic schoolboy at the Mall with the native American-- it's sort of an inkblot test in that anyone can see anything in that interaction. These incidents appear to be orchestrated or at least exploited by people seeking to make a point about trump supporters.

Now you've got Smollett, an actor who thinks his career is on the line, and he thinks to himself, what's one more incident? It will shine light on how evil trump supporters are, while boosting my career in the process. He's obviously very wrong, but in the context of many of these incidents (not as dramatic as the noose but nonetheless dramatic) I think it makes sense why he concluded that it was a permissible thing to do. He's not the first or the only one. He's just perhaps the most idiotic and most clearly attempting to profit.

Except when called out - he didn’t apologize or make amends, he doubled down. He’s still lying and crying that he didn’t do anything wrong. After being arrested and charged. He was on the Empire set today weeping and saying that he didn’t make this up when it’s clear as day that he did.

I supported him when this first came out but it’s clear as day that he’s in the wrong and he needs to admit that.

Many Democrats who rushed to judgement have apologized publicly - including on Twitter re: Smollett who is despicable.

However, NOTHING from Trump on the RWNJ arrested in Silver Spring, Maryland wanting to kill members of congress and the media.

Oh and nothing about crazy pants Roger Stone.

Save your outrage, MAGAS and please crawl back under your rocks. Bunch of hypocrites.Hope you are shaking in your collective boots. And please, for the love of God, dispose of your rifles.

Thanks so much.

Pp here-- He does need to admit that, but the same sort of flexible view of morals and reality that enabled him to get into this situation are also going to keep him in it. He knows that if he repeats the lie enough, it will start to seem true or plausible. He's personally better off if he holds the line because eventually public opinion will sway back around to support him. Even I find myself thinking, well, if he had to deal with the problems of racism, is it so wrong that one time he should get a profit from it?

He’s a black gay millionaire doing better than 95% of gay blacks and certainly better than the majority of black men in Chicago.

I know actors who would kill to have a steady five season role in a show like Empire with character billing, a seven-figure paycheck, housing and perks.

There is nothing you can say to me about him that takes away the feeling of absolute betrayal when I learned he fabricated this hoax. He needs to admit it, pay restitution and agree to counseling plus six months to a year in jail.

The only reason I feel so strongly about jail instead of probation + community service is because he went on GMA and lied to this nation’s face.

Hey, in the grand scheme of things, who cares if this dude from Empire told a lie to get some attention.

The dude from The Apprentice does that every single day!

It WAS hate crime.

Except the victims are Trump supporters everywhere.

He hates himself. Who has all of that anger - enough anger to self-sabotage?

It's almost sad in a way and definitely pathetic.

I wonder if they'll put him on a watch list for self-harm. I think once he faces his wrongdoing, he won't be able to handle the consequences.

I think a lot of DCUM liberals have similar hatred/anger issues. I've never seen so many hateful posts directed at Trump voters than here on DCUM.

Do you ever wonder why?

Because they are deranged and actually believe that they're always right and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong?

What do you think are the reasons they would give for why they hate you?

DP

Mostly I think it’s resenting the sheer audacity that someone could have a different opinion than they. This is not a trivial thing for people who consider themselves correct about everything. It’s an affront. From there, the hatred grows and feeds on itself.

Five or six years go, Donald Trump was just a eccentric, loudmouth rich guy with a tv show. No one hated him. No one called him racist. He was just Donald Trump. Three times married, lots of girlfriends, numerous affairs, expensive divorces, rich playboy real estate tycoon and tv producer. Yes, he was boorish and unsophisticated compared to typical east coast blue blood aristocracy... but no one would ever suggest he was a Nazi.

Now, people on this board regularly say that Trump is worse than Hitler.

Really? REALLY? I’m supposed to take anything you say seriously after reading that?

The left has completely jumped the shark with hatred for anyone who disagrees with them politically. Their outlook is completely binary. If you’re not with them, then you’re literally a Nazi worse than Hitler. People on the right, and people in the middle, just look at them in disbelief.

That’s where we are.

Best post I’ve ever read. Thank you.

No one is wasting a million words on David Duke or tucker Carlson or Laura Ingram or milo Yiannopoulos or even Bannon anymore. Because they aren't president.

Coherent much?

I'm unclear on how my post is incoherent. I just reread it and it seems pretty clear.

DP. Your post has nothing to do with anything. At all.

I was responding to this claim:

My point was that six years ago Trump didnt matter so why would people waste time writing about him. I gave examples of people I find repellent that I talk about a lot less than Trump. If any of those people became president in six years I would be similarly appalled and hope that much ink would be spilled on their horribleness.

My post was relevant to the chain I was responding to.

Um, no. Your train of thought is muddled and way off-topic. We don't get it. Move on.

DP

Yes. We do get it. Do not speak for me. I have a functional brain and completely understood PP’s point. It’s kind of sad that you don’t. Maybe you are the one that should move on.

The only reason I care about Empire is the spoof on Saturday night, “Them Trumps.”’

You can't contextualize crimes. That removes one of the primary features of our legal system, impartiality. No, the system isn't perfect, the wealthy still can afford better lawyers. No one likes that because treatment is unequal based on economic standing. Now you want to add social standing? Good luck.

Who apologized? I saw a bunch of tweets disappear . . . and lots of crickets . . .

We can go around and around and around, but you have your perspective (clearly liberal), and I have mine, which is moderate.

Your outrage is hysterical, by the way, as you continue to perpetuate stereotypes with hostile language.

The dude from the Apprentice did not have two people beat him up and then say he was the victim of a hate crime. Even someone of your limited sort, PP, can distinguish the difference, right?

He was greedy. I read where he was making $65K a week. That's a year's salary for many people.

No buts, Kamala. Making a false report, particularly one like this, is bad. Full stop. No ifs, ands, or buts. Jussie’s false claim didn’t just waste countless police resources..it did damage to ACTUAL victims of hate crimes.

I honestly can't believe she didn't apologize and say she regretted her rush to judgment. What an idiot.

She needs votes . . . It's called pandering.

You can’t understand the difference between an orchestrated hoax for personal gain that used the media for amplification and a chance encounter between a kid and two other parties that was grabbed onto by the media to advance a narrative? Those are two entirely different situations.....try to exercise your critical thinking skills once in a while.

There's no way you're a moderate dude lol. And I agree there hasn't been enough of a forceful condemnation of smollet.

I honestly think people don't even know what to say. This is such a horrible horrible thing to do. Its so demoralizing to have watched happen. It's just revolting. I don't even know what I'd say if I was a public figure.
