Why the conspiracies about 15 minute cities?

Anonymous
Apparently they're a plot by liberals or the WEF to take away our cars, to lock people in their neighborhoods, to restrict freedom of movement, to take away our rights and impose totalitarianism etc.

Don't forget take away our gas stoves.

What are you talking about? Link?

15 minute cities is actually the opposite. Having amenities close by, walkable and safely bikable frees people from the expense and burden of being car dependent.

it is a goal/aspiration that will take the US decades to achieve given the subruban wastelands that have been developed over the past 70 years.

Because there is a subset of morons that are trying to take away cars. Just like there is a subset of morons trying to take away gas stoves. It's an exaggeration based on a truth and no different than the subset of morons banning books etc. It's unfortunate but that is why we all need to tell these subsets of morons that they are morons.

For background, here is the Wikipedia entry on 15 Minute Cities:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/15-minute_city

"The 15-minute city is an urban planning concept in which most daily necessities and services, such as work, shopping, education, healthcare, and leisure can be easily reached by a 15-minute walk or bike ride from any point in the city. This approach aims to reduce car dependency, promote healthy and sustainable living, and improve well-being and quality of life for city dwellers."

The "conspiracy theory" section says:
"In 2023, unfounded conspiracy theories about the 15-minute concept began to flourish, which described the model as an instrument of government oppression. These claims are often part of or linked to other conspiracy theories that assert that Western governments seek to oppress their populations, such as QA**n, anti-vaccine theories or anti-5G misinformation. Proponents of the 15-minute concept, including Carlos Moreno, have received death threats.

Some conspiracy theorists conflate the 15-minute concept with the British low-traffic neighbourhood approach, which includes license plate scanners in some implementations. This has led conspiracy theorists to assert that the 15-minute model would fine residents for leaving their home districts, or that it would confine people in "open-air prisons". Supporters of the conspiracy believe the World Economic Forum (WEF) will take away people's freedom and lock them in their homes using the pretext of climate change."

They haven't been but, as I said, there is indeed a subset of morons that are pushing for that.

BoThSides!!! You really need to learn the difference between imagined online activity, and actual policy and legislation.
Books are ACTUALLY being banned. Right now.
Cars are not. Those things aren’t equal.

15 minute cities are basically the UK and Germany outside the major cities. You have a town that has urban-lite density - usually with a main shopping/commercial street. Then people live in the surrounding blocks. And then the town is surrounded by farm land and forests. Regional rail connects the town to larger cities and other similar towns. It the basic foundation of medieval settlement planning.

Very easy and quick to grab a coffee, pick up your medication, then go for a nice hike. Most people still own cars, but you're not a slave to the gas station to do every errand.

I honestly think it would really revitalize rural America. But that horse is out of the barn.

+1 If American towns looked like this people would be happier.
