I remember arguing with my mom over a toy chest and we wound up not buying because she was adamant on danger. Today there was a story on two four year old twins who got up and took their stuffed animals out of toy box and got in and died after falling asleep in it and parents had no idea because it was in their room and found out next day. I thought of my mom and how I told her she was nuts that I would
have things in the chest so not a problem with safety. Please people she was right-don’t have a chest with a lid. |
| Sad story. toy boxes should never have kids. |
| And we are sure that the parent didn’t actually lock them in the chest and then unlock it and pretend it was an accident? Because that’s my first thought. Not that two 4 year olds- that’s like 80lb of child- got into a toy chest and couldn’t shove the lid open or yell loud enough |
| I don't get it. Nothing wrong with boxes as long as they don't seal up. |
| This sounds so fishy. Four year olds??! Row of them. Nah not buying it. |
|
Sounds like a freak accident.

| So was this an actual toy chest (which can be opened by a child and is usually lighter and has no locks) or something like a heavy cedar hope chest (the big heavy ones meant for storing blankets in summer) or a steamer trunk (where the lid could fall and the latch wouldn't close tightly but could get caught if it falls properly). |
The mother described it as a "cedar toy chest," which is a contradiction in terms. Cedar chests are not toy chests - they are airtight by design and usually have a lock or a latch that can be opened by pressing. It sounds like they used a cedar chest as a toy chest, which is a terrible idea. |
| That’s terrifying. The poor parents! Makes me grateful I use old cardboard diaper boxes as toy chests; one less thing to be anxious about. |
Ahh thank you for that info. That makes a lot of sense about how it happened, I know what you are talking about. Those Amish hope chests are super heavy and some are very long in order to fit giant quilts (so makes sense how both kids fit in) and some have a lock because they were designed so you kept your valuables and heirlooms in them. |
Yeah. Our toy chest is not that study and the lid does not even meet the box all the way, it sits about an inch above leaving a gap. There are also two handles on the sides which are also wood cutouts so between all those things it would not be possible to suffocate. Terrible fear mongering OP. |
| People buy that sort of thing on Etsy for kids because it looks more “heirloom” than a cheap toy chest from target. I agree that generally you don’t want anything with a lid unless it’s a small bin. We used big open top canvass bins for toys. |
Parents should have checked before the next day! How did they not give them a bath, read them a story and put them to bed? So it isn't the toy boxes fault but the neglectful parents. Also, twins means two so no need for saying two twins. Either say two or twins, not both! |
Sounds more like the parents just haven’t been charged yet. “We are working with our partners at the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death," police added. "At this time, we don’t know if this is an accident or if foul play is involved.” No charges have been filed as of Tuesday.” There is something not right about this story. Or a “sound proof” cedar chest. |
| This reminds me of that video that was going around a few months ago of two twins tipping over an unsecured dresser onto themselves in their room, presumably during nap time. In both cases I wonder, where the hell were the parents?!? I didn’t sleep train so I’m biased, but Jesus Christ it’s like extreme sleep training to be so disconnected from your kids when they are in their room that you don’t have a monitor, don’t check on them EVER during sleep periods, and are comfortable being so far away from them while they’re sleeping that you couldn’t even hear them screaming for their lives. It’s just totally unfathomable to me. |
