Bottled water

We only drink bottled spring water in our home and I’m noticing that it’s costing us a lot of money. Everyone in our households drinks a lot of water which is good, but it’s getting to be pretty expensive and I’m starting to worry about our consumption of micro plastics. I’ve been keeping track and we buy 9 packs of water with 40 bottles in each pack every two weeks. That’s 360 bottles!

Does anyone have alternative suggestions to mimi or cost and plastic use? I know there are filtered water options but I’m specifically looking to hear folks’ pros/cons for the type of water system they use and whatever anyone else does bottles. Thanks.

Test your tap water. Assuming it’s clean, drink that. Any random metal water bottle will be fine.

We use one of those large Brita tanks in our fridge. You just replace the filter every couple months and clean the whole thing out. We all just pour the water into our own reusable water bottles and take those with us everywhere. This has saved a ton of money and lessened our waste.

Do you live in Flint, MI?

If not, drink tap water.

You can put a Brita filter on the kitchen sink faucet.

Brita filter OP. Or, get an under sink water filter.

Jesus, I can’t believe people buy bottled water like this for everyday use.

If you refuse to drink tap water at least get the 5 gallon bottles delivered and get a water cooler. At least those bottles get reused.

I’m shocked that you don’t know if alternatives like a Brita filter, having a water service like Deer Park come to your house, or just get a reverse osmosis under your sink for drinking water. It costs a couple thousand dollars, but it’s worth it and it tastes better than the bottle water anyway.

I, too, hate this expense but can’t get around it. We buy Fiji water for the following reasons:

1). It flat out tastes better. Some people scoff at the idea that water has a taste, but if you try it, you will 100% see it.

2). It has a higher mineral content and pH than other waters – this has been scientifically documented. Just because all water looks the same does not mean they are all the same – lettuce that has E. coli may look the same as lettuce without E. coli, but certainly they are different.

3). I previously got annoyed with his expense and tried out the reverse osmosis machines at MOM’s. For one, it’s a hassle to carry all your bottles back-and-forth from the supermarket (unlike Fiji, which I get auto-delivered by Amazon). And two, I noticed that the bottles developed a moldy smell when I did this – I question the cleanliness of the MOM’s machines.

For all these reasons, I just suck it up and pay for the Fiji water.

Get a reverse osmosis system from a company installed. There are no bottles to deal with.

This is so wasteful not to mention that you and your family are ingesting plastic. Please get a filter and stop buying bottled water. If you really need spring water buy from these folks: https://www.mountainvalleyspring.com/pages/homedelivery

You're not the one "sucking it up" when you buy bottled water from Amazon. You're killing the earth and exploiting workers.

Also, there are no actual documented (since you're into scientific documentation) benefits to drinking water with a higher pH.

We put a reverse osmosis system in our home and it's been the best thing ever. We do live outside the DC area now where the water is crazy hard. It's very common to have them here. It's so nice to have a specific tap for perfect water. We all have Takeya water bottles in various sizes.
