Don’t workout on my period

Anonymous
This week was my period week. I did not work out.

Does anyone else not work out while mensurating?

The most I can do during that time is get out of bed and go through the motions. Exercise has never been part of that.

I don't skip a beat so just the opposite. In fact, exercising helps lessen the cramps and takes my mind off of it. I don't feel nearly as bloated and gross.

Also no need to take a whole week off. I could maybe see day 1 and 2 when it's the heaviest, but an entire week?

This. I feel so much better after exercising. Day 1 sucks when I’m hemorrhaging but movement makes everything better.

+1

The only thing I don’t do is inversions in yoga, while on my period which traditionally is not recommended. Also, I’m not interested in having a bleed out on my yoga pants in the middle of downward dog.

I do work out, but I don’t give myself grief if I don’t go as hard as usual.

I sometimes take those days off. Usually day 2 and 3, sometimes day 1 if I'm really uncomfortable. I fatigue incredibly easily when I'm on my period and when I do work out on those days, it's hard for me to get through a usual workout. Also for me it's more than just cramps (though those do hold me back bit). My body is just super tender and sensitive on my heavy period days -- very tender breasts, my skin often feels reactive. Sometimes just putting own a sports bra feels painful, much less trying to go for a run or get through a barre class.

Sometimes I'll just throw on sweatpants and a loose t-shirt do a short yoga routine instead (like 20 minutes) and then some breathing exercise and lie on my acupressure mat. And I'll skip or half-ass any movements that don't feel good. Then a nice hot shower. It's less about getting in a workout than giving my body some TLC. I think movement is good, but I'm not going to do a bunch of split squares and dead lifts when I feel like crap.

I think it's fine to take it easy. Obviously some people enjoy working out on their period or find I helps, but I think it's okay to give yourself a break if that's what feels right to you. Every body is different.

Some have very heavy periods all week.

Yes of course. But I always feel better with movement than without. I just have to keep that top of mind when I would rather just crawl up with a heating pad.

I don't. I bleed like a stuck pig and can't stand up for an hour. I don't get cramps, but "a river runs through it".

I can’t. Terrifying cramps make getting through a day at work a challenge. And no exercise does not help them for me. I’ve tried; it just makes me nauseous as well. L

I try, but the fatigue is debilitating and like PP I have debilitating cramps and heavy flow. Plus intense digestive issues for the first few days. It’s not a workout-friendly situation. It’s frustrating because I lose so much fitness and feel like I’m starting my routine over every. Single. Time.

I use continuous birth control but get breakthrough bleeding around 10 weeks or so and go off the pill then. But it’s better than every 4th week so I recommend it as a fix.
